    WWII Chocolate Cake

this is good to make in the dutch oven, the only way I've ever had it. Just don't let it cook too fast.

    Sift together:
    3 c. flour
    6 T. cocoa
    1 1/4 c. sugar
    2 t. baking soda
    1 t. salt
    Add:
    2 c. cold water
    3/4 c. oil
    2 T. apple cider vinegar
    2 t. vanilla

Grease and flour a 9x12 pan or 10" foil lined dutch oven. Bake @ 350*F for 0-35 minutes.

    Not WWII icing-blend together:
    1 pkg Cream cheese
    1 box powdered sugar
    vanilla to taste

Got any history on this recipe to share? Sounds like there should be a story to go with it.....

I think the cake was born out of necessity due to the scarcity of typical cake ingredients which were helping the war effort. I also think that some ingredients were more availible in some areas of the country and not in others and therefore exists different variations of this cake.

I've ate this cake since I was a kid. It was my dad's favorite and mom made it for him frequently.

The icing from her recipe is powdered sugar, milk and vanilla.

A very suitable recipe for this 68th Anniversary of D-Day in France.
