Aussie Cast Boolit Question,Johnson Paste Wax

A question for the Aussie caster's here.

As the Johnson Paste Wax does not seem to be available here in Oz for the 45-45-10 lube mix, unless imported from the USofA & with the import cost prohibitive.

What are you all using as a substitute wax for your lubes.

Wal - I'm thinking you could substitute any "car wax" that has a high concentration of carnauba in it. I have some Blue Coral at home that is sold as carnauba wax, of course, it's not all carnauba. It is close enough that I would substitute it in a minute for JPW if I ran out.

Do watch for higher percentages of petroleum distillates. Most any car wax will contain them, and they may be flammable !!! A little caution. Let us know how it works out. enjoy Mike

    Thanks captaint,

Will go search out the carnauba, but any I found earlier usually on fleabay weren't cheap either.

Also will watch for the petroleum when I start mixing.

I don't know what sort of car waxes you have down-under, but very, very few of them in the US are not water-based emulsions.

Can you get Trewax wood floor wax? Trewax makes a product very similar to JPW and used for the same things. You need the paraffin in JPW as much as the carnauba percentage when making 45/45/10.

DOH! yeah, you're right. I have a friend who does hardwood floors for a living and he swears by the stuff for certain surfaces. We used it in the cabinet shop to keep planer, shaper, jointer, and saw tables slick.

You are so right there, one of the most popular car polishes sold down here is Repo Extra Cut, as the description states "Extra Cut" will definitely stay away from that one.

I'm looking at a can of Trewax. On the side it says......."USE ON!....Furniture, Woodwork, or Hardwood, Vinyl, Cork and Linoleum Floors, Marble, and Metal Surfaces"

That's usually the difference between a polish and a wax; the polish contains abrasives to "polish", the wax is just to coat the surface, no "polishing".

I'd personally not be worried about an abrasive paint polish. It's abrasive to paint and removes the degraded top layer only but does contain some wax to make the 'fresh' surface shine. will it actually touch steel? I don't know but I doubt it. It should keep the steel bore clean though if there was enough of it.

Just about given up trying to find a subsitute for the Johnson wax down here. am going to get some Carnuba, Carnauba wax flakes/powder from the States.

Expensive shipping, but can't see any other way round it if I'm to get a reasonable start with knocking up my own lubes.

Thanks for the suggestions guy's, but I think I'm on my own down here, which will make it even more fun.

I use cutting compound to do final polishes on trigger jobs, etc, so yes, it does remove metal, albeit in tiny amounts; perhaps only a few million molecules at a time?

I remember years ago Trewax used to make a hard carnauba paste wax for floors &c and was sold in a can, guess they called it quits for that product.

    Nope, Trewax still makes it.

    Product Description
Trewax paste wax clear 12.35-ounce is made with natural brazilian carnauba wax, the worlds' hardest natural wax. It provides a lustrous hard and long-wearing finish. For use on hardwood floors, fine furniture, granite and marble and bronze.
