    Bolt knob ideas????

Here's the bolt knob on one of my Turk Mausers. Any ideas for an unusual knob on a Mosin-Nagant? KCSO's outstanding work put me to thinking. A 1/4" x 3" or so hardware store bolt would multiply the chambering leverage. But I'd need a cool knob. They make all kinds of cool gearshifter knobs, but they're too big.

I used a hardwood knob from the local woodcraft store and Gorilla glued it to my T99 Arisaka's bolt handle. I then stained the ball to match the stock and then covered the ball with a clear coat poly and its really helped provide a better grip and leverage with the bolt.

Junior, I think if you go to the industrial supply sites like MSC, McMaster-Carr, Grainger, you'll find a large assortment of different ball handles along with oblong, tear drops, etc. Might be a possibility lurking in those selections somewhere.

Thanks, Bret, but I've spent hours on those sites with no luck. What I want is a brass skull about 1" diameter. I'll make a physical-
browsing trip to Ace Hardware tomorrow. Closest thing I like I've found in the junk at home is an ancient stubby screwdriver with a worn, clear-but-dull yellow phenolic/plastic handle. I could heat the blade and pull it, then tap the hole. We shall see.

For skull stuff check the ad sections in hot rod magazine and biker magazines, like Easyriders and In the Wind.

I use balls from well pumps. You can anneal and drill them for the shank and then flatten and checker them. Otherwise aluminum stock is easy to thread and turn to about any shape you want and you could add inlays too.

Try using google for a skull key chain. They make them about the right size but I am not sure what material they are made from. Nice looking rifle.

I have 17 remington BDL that I had difficulty cycling the action because of the scope I had mounted.

I ground down the factory bolt knob to where I could thread it, then I turned a brass plumbing fixture on my metal lathe to take the place of the factory knob.

Because it was now a slightly longer and fatter bolt knob, it did exactly what's been mentioned here; it not only gave me more clearance from my scope but, it also gave me more leverage when cycling the action.

Dear Lord man! When you said "cool" I was thinking more like a chrome ball or something!

You ought to know I wouldn't want a "normal" looking bolt knob!

I dont know about a scull, but I could stack SS and walnut up and make you a very classy, one of a kind, bolt knob. I was a knifemaker for several years and I learned a few tricks to make something as small as a bolthandle look pretty striking.

My philosopy is: cheaper is better and free is best of all!! Besides, putting one of your classy bolt knobs on my butchered Mosin-Nagant "Rain Rifle" would be like putting lipstick on a pig's lips!

SCREWDRIVER HANDLE! Or maybe a door knob or a toilet handle. A skull ain't near redneck enough.

Nope, nope, nope. A door knob is way too big, and I ain't never seen a cool toilet handle. Besides a pot metal toilet handle bolt knob wouldn't take the stress of a fast #2 shot at ol' Mossy Horns if by some miracle #1 missed. Wait. #1 missed him several years ago.... But it did kill this leaf about a foot over his back.....

Have someone machine a steel bullet with a hole in the end that you can silver solder a piece of that brass onto.

I've got an old mauser with 4" of a 9/16 box end wrench as a bolt handle, pretty cool.
