Greetings, I was at Cabellas yesterday and they hardly had much selection on guns and most of the Ammo all gone, the local gun stores who had some ammo had doubled the prices and the same with guns too.
I had warned about this very situation months back and this is the time to load up your own and plenty of it,

Here are the powders that did exceptionally well in our 20 ga .575 RB Nitro Express Hunting loads:

B. 4756
C. Universal
D. Blue Dot
E. Herco
F. HS 6
G. WSF
H. 7625
I. Bullseye
J. Unique
Alliant Steel was good for hunting but did not shine as the 4756 or Longshot due to RB being only 285 gr. needs heavier payload.

Good morning Centershot, those are basic starting but decent loads, try 2 3/4 hulls first and as you increase the powder switch over to 3 inch hulls.
Make a hull depth gauge, that will come in very handy.
After I pour powder charge I push the deepth gauge in and that tells me how my wad column will fit in the hull minus my fold crimp already marked on the gauge. You could do one better by making it one side for 20 gauge and the other side of the same for 12 gauge.
Those " O " ring set came from a dollar store years back.

I'm repenting why I bought so many 12 gauge guns, even tho I grew up with 12 gauge all along but today, its a waste buying a 12 gauge when 20 gauge High Power Nitro Express can do far better and is the format of the future with far better rifled barrels, I love them around 26 inch as I have them on my TC Encore Pro Hunter with 26 inch SS barrels in 20 and 12 gauge.
I hate to see my gun spitting out burning powder just because my barrel was not long enough for that powder.
The Savage 220 SS version only has 22 inch barrel, tho. Its good to have 26 inch barrel for Alliant Steel and 4759 powders along with Fed 209A magnum primers for those heavy faster loads.

Greetings, For all my friends and relatives suffering from COVID-19, hang in there. Take 1000 mg Vitamin C, D and drink Lemon and Turmuric drink first thing in the morning. Eat boiled eggs daily.

I have to ask... why is 20 ga. better than 12 ga.?
I know you love your 20 ga. "nitro express" guns and so do many others but I am still trying to figure out what makes them better. Not trying to contradict or criticize or start an argument, I am trying to figure out why.
For non-handloaders I can see an argument in that the 20 ga. guns are a little lighter and will have less recoil, and likely slugs have somewhat better ballistic coefficient so may fly a little flatter/farther. But... for handloaders what is the advantage? 12 ga. sabot slugs can be the same diameter and weight as 20 ga. so effectively reach same velocity with less pressure, have same ballistic coefficient and same recoil.
If rifled gun I can't use the "12 ga. is better with buckshot argument" so that's out but even with slugs, there are a variety of weights of 12 ga. slugs available, sabot slugs, full bore slugs, wad slugs that can duplicate the loadings for 20 ga.
If a guy isn't ever wanting 12 ga. full load slugs then if buying a new gun no reason to choose 12 ga. over 20 ga. I guess but overall the 12 ga. is more versatile... I think.
Enlighten me! What am I missing? Or is it just a preference?
I am a 12 ga. guy and all my guns and reloading equipment, slug moulds all 12 ga. so I am not likely to change unless there is good reason to. As you know, I am also still a smoothbore guy so there the 12 ga. is better with buckshot or say Tri-Ball.
Convince me that I should buy a 20 ga. rifled gun! there is your challenge!

Well point blank, a 12 gauge is far superior to a 20 all else equal. The reason a 20 gauge makes a better slug gun is the simple fact that a 12 gauge loaded to the gills is an animal to shoot. It's hard to shoot accurately with a gun that recoils worse than most African dangerous game rifles. A 20 gauge you can get to the high velocities without outrageous recoil.Originally Posted by Hamish
If we just step back to factory loads for a second, we can compare the 12 gauge vs 20 gauge Remington Accutip sabot slug. The 12 gauge round is a 58 caliber and 385 grain bullet, with a muzzle velocity of 1850 fps. The 20 gauge version I don't see the caliber listed, probably 45 caliber and it is listed at 260 grains, with a muzzle velocity of 1850 fps. The ballistic coefficient is .145 for the 12 gauge and .144 for the 20 gauge. So what you get is identical trajectory and wind deflection, but significantly less recoil in the 20 gauge. A bore size ball weights about 350 grains for the 20 gauge, and 580 grains for the 12 gauge. Now this is only a matter of opinion, but bullets of that weights look like pancakes. To my eye, a 435 (1 ounce) bullet is the minimum I would consider an actual bullet in a 20 gauge. A 12 gauge, A 650 grain is already rather stubby, and 700 grains looks proportionate to a 435 grain 20 gauge. I can assure you, you can send a 700 grain slug at a good pace from a 12 gauge, but it is a handful. A 1 ounce slug on the other hand, can be shot at higher velocities far easier. I even found a 350 grain ball at a whopping 1700 fps is a very accurate load in 20 gauge. I've never got anywhere near that speed that shoots good in 12 gauge.
All that said, I feel deer hunting specific slug guns are past their prime. Many states are ditching them. If that were not the case, I think a lot of potential exists in .410 and 28 gauge. Instead, I lean towards 12 gauge, for the wide variety of components available.
