    lead hammer

Does anyone know where I can get an inexpensive lead hamme mold or how a NON-machinist might make one? I was thinking a gas pipe nipple with end caps and then cut the pipe length wise down the center might work.

The hammer would only have to be 1 to 2 lbs.

Laminate a couple of toilet paper roll tubes together, tape a bottom on too! Cut a hole in the center and insert a metal handle, with notches so it won't come out. Pack sand around the mold and to support the handle. Fill with lead, and allow to cool. Remove paper, and you have a new lead hammer. Made several over the years this way. The toolman.

Along the same line, tomato paste cans are a good size for a hammer. Cut the handle hole, split down the side for removal, insert the handle, duct tape seals the split, a hose clamp to hold it closed, pour, cool, peel.

How about filling a 1 1/4" copper coupling with lead, and leave the copper on the outside?

Yep! A friend gave me a chunk of lead he cast in a beerverage can years ago. He peeled the aluminum off after casting. It's HEAVY. I decided to keep it as is. Will melt in case of zombies and have nothing else.

The tomato paste can sounds like a good size. I had thought about one of those energy drink cans also. Soda can would be way too big for what I want and the copper TEE sounds nice but the copper fitting left on would pose a problem.

The reason I want the hammer is that currently I use a lead ingot to drive the swaged bullet out of my Hawks swage die and it seems to work quite well. I just think a nice looking little hammer would look better.

Before you suggest a raw hide or rubber mallet, I think the ejector rod on the Hawk die would destroy one very quickly. The rod is just that, a straight rod with no end cap like the C & H.

What is a Hawks swage die and who makes it?

I have thought about drilling a hole in a block of wood for the hammer head, and drilling a smaller hole for the handle. After pouring when the lead has solidified, just split the wood away.

Hawks Precission Bullet sells a single die swaging set for making bullets. The set that I got allows me to make either all lead or half jacked bullet in a round nose, wadcutter or semi wadcutter.

I have sense figured out you do not need the washer and you can just use painters tape to seal the seams

I got all excited until I looked and they don't have a hollow-point nose for the .38/.357 die set.

This system has worked for me for years although I use a length of copper pipe with one cap on it. Bore a hole through the side of the pipe, stick in my handle and add lead. When cool I just use it. One lasts about 2 years.

It appears you must have found the page that has the dies for $50.00. This is an old ad and he does need to find out how to pull it from the internet. He does make a 38/357 but I believe it is just a straight semi wadcutter. This company is the same one that sells on ebay for $145.00. Give him a call and talk to him. He may be able to help you out.

Also, it took less then 2 weeks for me to get my die set.
