    6.5x53R Dutch

Well, it's official. I'm outa town on business so the better 2/3's sent off the check for a 6.5x53R Dutch carbine for a small game rifle. The dies are on order. Reckon it's time for a mold. Find some .303's to form. Got a cruise missile mold but think it'll be too long. We'll see. Can't wait try try out some paper patches just 'cause you never know!

For a long time I've been sniffing around for an H&R single shot for a small game small bore and was leaning towards 7-08. This might just be way much better.

I've never work with the Dutch carbines before and do not know the model designations.

Does the cruise missile try to key hole with yours at lower velocities?

Never had one key hole. If you post a picture I might be able to tell which model you have.

Swede Nelson is running a group buy 6.5 called the .269 145grn F/N that will soon be going in for production. I have one on order for my 1906 Hembrug sporterized carbine. When I slugged my bore I got .268" with a slight taper down towards the muzzle.

Here's the link to that Group Buy: http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?t=116328

    Hope this helps,

The Netherlands military museum has the WORST dang online website I've ever seen. It is very hard to find what you're looking for... never mind it being in Dutch.

A word about handguards on Dutch carbines. My No.5 carbine has no handguard. That does not mean it is ~missing~ the handguard.

Introduced in 1938 to a shortage of rifles in the motor artillery regiments and the artillery brigade needs. Since that time more than enough guns were available, the carbines were made from the guns. Later in other parts. Key features include the wood with padded berths for the old brackets and the cordon cordon been soldered bracket on the top cushion. Production around 36,000 pieces. The two shown here copies differ from each other as one well, and the other has no hand guard. Both carry a stamp decline from 1940.

At the bottom, the cordon bracket is the filled hole to see where a cordon Sat bracket before the rifle was converted to carbine.

The upper bracket cordon is soldered to the upper band, behind the upper band is the filled hole to see where formerly a ramrod slot Sat.

This Dutch carbine below is an EBAY firearm!!!

    Oops.
Unique / cornmeal case forming loads 48 hrs after loading... they go pffft instead of bang. Had to reload the older ones.

As I have been firing case forming loads I've cleaned the carbine's barrel using Hoppe's No.9. Mop it down, scrub it out.
And the gray colored nickel fouling has come out from the 160 grain round nosed silver bullet military ammo used by the previous owner. And the corroded steel beneath the fouling came out. What we're talking here is iron powder washing out of the uncovered pits. What previously appeared to be a barrel that one could reasonably expect to give decent accuracy with cast now looks like a Gulf Coast marine environment corrosion test sample.

OK, I'm not giving up on this beautiful little baby. Started on polishing out the barrel today.
My plan is to polish it until there seems to perhaps be some possibility of hitting what I'm shooting at and then seeing how big the groove diameter is.
After scrubbing and polishing for a while I'm planning on fire lapping. Advice from those who have done it to a centerfire rifle would be most very welcome.

You can use pp to clean out the remaining fouling bit if there is deep / newly uncovered pitting, you are likely to tear patches and start leading again. You can firelap with David Tubbs Final Finish, although you may not be getting good contact with that barrel.

I would go at it hell for leather with JB compound until it's clean and smooth. You may then have s measurably larger bore and shallow groves. That's when paper patching will shine. PPB like shallow grooves and you will be able to patch our to a nice snug fit.
