Good morning folks! I just got this barrel at a reasonable price and was wanting to use it in an AR build. It is a varmint profile at 24 inches and is chambered in 22/250. I want to re-chamber to 223 Wylde, shorten to 20 in., maybe as short as 16 in. In either case, can I assume a carbine length gas system would be best or what would be the longest gas system that could be used? My boolit is 61 grain, Elvis powder coated. 1800 fps min. would be my goal. Thanks for any input!

The other issue will be getting the port hole timed into the groove not in a land or in between the 2. I to think 1-14 will be slow for 60 grn bullets length. A 1-12 or 1-10 might be better
So lighter bullet, then?
1:14 is perfect. I'm pretty sure the boolit you refer to is blunt, so not very long. 1:14 stabilizes the Speer 70 grain jacketed bullet in .223; why wouldn't it stabilize a blunt 61 grain boolit? My 1:16" .22 Hornet stabilizes my 55 grain 225415.
I would consider using a pistol length gas port location and an adjustable gas block. That would give you greater flexibility in powder choice and velocity.
Larry is probably right but original 223 was 1:12, made faster to get tumbling. Carbine gas should work fine. 16-18" would be good, stiffer barrel. GB is usually 0.75" ID. Prolly need GC on the mould.

Original AR-15 twist as made by Stoner for the original 53-grain flatbase .224E2 bullet was 1:14" twist.
This would not stabilize the 55-grain boattail M193, so the twist was changed to 1:12" when the Army first adopted the M16A1.
A 1:14" twist when driven hard in the .22-250 with max. loads of 38 grains of IMR4350 will stabilize the 70-grain Speer RN, but it isn't going to do it at the velocities attainable in a .223, ain't gonna happen.

That .675" long bullet will need right at 2900fps to stabilize in the 1:14 and a 1:11 or better twist to stabilize at your 1800 fps.

You could sell the Tikka barrel for enough money to buy a nice ready made AR barrel just like you want.

Yes it could, doesn't even have to be powder coat. The bullet length is what you are concerned with, start looking at mold drawings from different sites and use this calculator to get you started, not the best but will work. http://kwk.us/twist.html RCBS shows their 55 gr FP stable in loads for 1:14 twist 22-250, Lyman Cast has data too, NOE TL 52 gr at .505" long will be stable at less than your 1800 fps, but with the blunt nose may not feed. Use the calculator to play around before you buy.
