    Smile Ruger blackhawk likes pancakes

I made this a few weekends ago with the Idea being I would make and post a "how-to" article, but I haven't had the time. But since it came out so well, I thought I'd post a pic or two.Attachment 40846

This style of holster is very easy to make, though the patterns are a little more difficult to draw.

I've been experimenting with a pancake patternfor my 4 4/5 Blackhawk. I noticed it will fit "almost correctly" in a Roy Baker pancake for the 4" K frame, so I'm using that as a starting point. The holster design itself is good, but getting the belt slots in the right places for the way i want to carry is a bit of a bother.

Thanks for posting that, I like it!

Years ago I paid to have a pancake made for my 4 5/8" SBH, unfortunately the fellow didn't do as I asked and the belt slots aren't right. I've continued to use it thinking that one day I would have another one made properly, maybe I'll just make one myself.

That is a nice looking holster. What did you use to dye the leather?

Nice! Did you use bees wax to dye the leather?

I used Fiebings (by far the best leather dye, IME) Oil Based Medium brown for the die and then applied a coat of atom wax. After the wax dried, it was brushed with a very soft 40 year old shoe brush and then hand burnished with the sleeve off an old flannel shirt. I used Fiebings Brown Edge Dressing on the edges.

Bees wax is harder to apply--you really have to rub it in--and more difficult to get even. Kiwi neutral shoe polish is better, but the Tandy Leather Liquid Atom Wax is the easiest to apply and the result is just as nice. Especially, if you have basket stamped or hand carved your holster, the liquid wax is far superior.

Here is another example, this one done in Fiebing's Saddle Tan.

That is some fine lookin leather.
My Uberti "Evil Roy" would look great in that rig.
I especially like the color, and pattern in the leather.
    Very nice job.
You ever think of making one of those to fit up against your chest, with wrap around straps?

Excellent work on both of the holsters. I will admit that I have never heard the term "Pancake" used to mean holster so the title of the post really had me wondering. I figured you were shooting them !!!
