    30 cal hollow point bullets?

What size hollow is in a 30 cal hollow point bullet closest to 1/8 or 1/16 inch?

The Forester HP tool has a drill for rifle @ 1/16" and pistol @1/8" IIRC. 358439 has a pin of .155"
I guess a lot depends on alloy and what you want it to do. Depth of the pin gives us the same questions.

    Willyp:
I have some cast hp that I received in a trade some time back. They are a gc design and weigh at 165 grains. The hp is .080 diameter, and .300 deep.

I use the 1/8" Forster to HP .30 cal and up bullets. I use the 1/16" tool for 7mm down to .22. Have done such for 40+ years with complete success.

I had the pin for my 311291 HP made at a .15" diameter. I'm using these in a .308 win at 1800 fps with ACWW. The combo of alloy/velocity/diameter and depth seems to be balanced. They opened nicely on a lung shot doe and small buck this year. My original intent was to use these in a .30-30 with full power loads. I'd be nervous about pushing these any faster without making changes in alloy.

2 years ago I redneck hollowpointed a ACWW 311290 with a 1/8" drill bit and pushed it to 2,000 in my 06. The boolit hung together on a cross chest shot that punched through both shoulder blades of a 150 lb doe.

    My experience is limited. YMMV

Erik does a real nice " Cup Point " HP conversion on a mold :

Here is the 311291 with the Cup Point.

Would think that that cup point being a smidge shorter would allow the blt to be seater out a bit more as well. An advantage for short necked cases like 308/300 Sav. etc.

Being custom made in most cases, you choose the style or size. Buckshot may even supply you with several pins when he does the conversion.

The standard Lyman factory HP was .100 on the several I have and I've used that on all my locally fabricated HPs and it does well./beagle

Wanting the versatility of HP ing any boolit and any loaded cartridge, I purchased a Forster Hollow Pointing tool. But now, I believe I need to additionally purchase Forster's LONG base (6 1/2") since my STANDARD base (5 3/8") is too short for my longest 30-06 loads with 311284s, 311290s and 311299s........3.360" O.L. +/-......even after moving each end of the trimmer to their outer most positions.
Am I missing something with the STANDARD base? Do I need to just go buy the LONG base? Or HP a 311291 in the 30-30 for hunting and call it good? Your experiences sure would be appreciated. dmitch
