    MiHec 45 2.1 Design Cramer-type Lyman 311440 (HP'd 30 cal Hammer o' Thor)

    Closed

Here's a picture of the boolit that 45 2.1 designed and Miha is going to make moulds for:

I fell in love with this boolit reading my Lymans' Cast Bullet Handbook. Look at that big gorgeous meplat. It ought to smack the heck out of whatever you are shooting at, and it's planty flat for tubular magazines. I have heard that it likes to be driven fast and is bona fide deer medicine.

The 45 2.1 design functions in 30-30's, 308's, and 30-06's. I think it does in 303's. One rifle the nose might be too tight a fit for is the Marlin. Marlin chambers run tighter than Winchester 94's.

Here are your prices and options:

Diameters: It's 0.312" nominal driving bands if you want a gas checked mould. If you want plain based, I think we can get you one with 0.314" driving bands.

2-cavity or 4-cavity (but we'd like to pare it down to one or the other)

    Gas checked or plain base.

    Basic prices:

The 2-cavity moulds are $90 plus shipping.
The 4-cavity moulds are $125 plus shipping.

Then there's pins, and I will update this when I know for sure what the extra pin charge is.

The moulds use Lee 6-cavity handles or Miha's excellent CNC machined handles, which you can buy at MP Molds (Miha's Website).

    Hello,
How much engraving is the ideal for a bore riding nose?

    Zero?
    .001"?
    .002"?

Max engraving would be how much?

I am only going to buy one mold and trying to figure which size would be best for several rifles..
    Thanks..

As stated in the "discussion" thread:

    I will take one 2 cavity "standard" with small H/P pins and a set of plug style flat nosed pins;

    and

one 2 cavity "American" with small H/P pins and a set of plug style flat nosed pins.

If we are starting a new list here in the active thread, put me down for one 4 cavity brass Cramer style mold with standard HP pins and "plug" pins in the 301/312 size.

just wondering if 45 2.1 can tell us if the radius nose has any difference in impact/bleed out in game as opposed to a sharp edged nose, like a RanchDog?

I would guess NO, as it would probably expand some, and that negates any advantage of a sharper edge once the initial hole is made.

What would be the farthest one could expect good performance at 30-30 MV's? I'm thinking impact velocity on this one can be lower due to that flat nose.

Just wondering if 45 2.1 can tell us if the radius nose has any difference in impact/bleed out in game as opposed to a sharp edged nose, like a RanchDog? You'll note that RD went to a radiused nose on his latest 30 cal. rifle boolit. Most animals hit with this boolit go right down.

I would guess NO, as it would probably expand some, and that negates any advantage of a sharper edge once the initial hole is made. We haven't shot anything with a hollow point yet as the solid does so well killing and knocking things down and out. Velocities used in testing were around 1800 to 1900 fps.

What would be the farthest one could expect good performance at 30-30 MV's? I'm thinking impact velocity on this one can be lower due to that flat nose. We've shot varmints and stuff at approx. 125 yds and under so far. DRT at that distance with a placed shot. Longer shoots are harder to get in the normal 40 acres fenced setup with crop fields, timber and brush intermixed.

Henry, are we starting a new list here or are you going to migrate the old list to the active thread? I posted my wants on this active thread, I suppose we'll all have to wait til you get the pin info. I have a mold to cast solids so HP pins that don't stick out the bottom would be all I would need unless there is more than one HP style or size. Looking forward to getting the first post edited with drawings and dimensions maybe, and a list. I like to print the first page or two of the active thread and put it in the box with the mold. It kind of establishes the provenance of the mold.

What is the as cast weight projected to be in WW both as a HP and solid? I read the 6 pages of the initial discussion and didn't find the weight. The original Lyman was 147 grains in a solid with a GC. If the bands are wider and WW's are heavier than #2 alloy, I assume it will be more than 147 grs as a solid.
