    Thin Wall 30 cal. Jackets???

Is there a brass case that can be formed to make a thin walled jacket for a 30 cal. rifle bullet? Or is one available commercially?

    Kend,

Look up BT Sniper and 5.7 to 30 caliber. Not really a thin wall jacket, but 30 caliber none the less.

the sierra or Berger J4 will be the thinnest I am pretty sure. you could possibly expand a 22 mag case up to 30 but it would be iffy and would only get you the lightest 30 caliber bullets. (.308)

I'll have to check the Sierra jackets I have. I am willing to bet the 5.7x28 case is thinner. It certainly expands easy.

5.7 case on the left. Sized 9mm on the right. Sizing the 9mm to 30 cal is not a lot of fun by the way.

recovered 30 cal bullets. 9mm jacket on left, 5.7 jacket on right. Both shot at 3000FPS. I would also bet these 5.7 jacket would perform exellent at much slower speeds too.

30 carbine would size down about the same as a 9mm case, they just are not as easy to find, but I think the walls are pretty thin.

Yep I got some 30 carbine and it would make a great 30 cal jacket. Hard to find and can be a bit spendy. The 5.7 is just as hard to come by and about the same price but I think the 5.7 just might be the most explosive of all the potential 30 cal jackets yet I still have taken two Oregon Mule deer with them.

    Brian,

Have you tried using your universal notching die on these rifle bullets?

Yep! Works good! I didn't try long enough to make it perfect but it will certainly be easy enough. The 5.7 jacket expands so easily allready I don't know if it would be really be needed but it would look cool.

Well this was with the 32 cal CH die. I don't know how well it will work with my longer ogive 308 bullets. Guess I'll have to try it.

Imagine a plastic ballistic tip in that bullet! That would look cool!

No need for a plastic tip. Well, unless loading in 30-30, etc with a tube magazine.

But, the notched nose would be perfect for small game, like deer, etc. You don't want a heck of a lot of penetration.

    Sweet! Thanks for the photos.
