    .358 Winchester

Doing a little thinking on putting a .358 Winchester barrel on a Parker - Hale rifle that I have and was looking into the .358 Winchester round.

It looks like it would be pretty good for cast boolits. I have read here that some folks have been having pretty good luck with it.

I also got to thinking that single #000 buckshot may make a pretty good plinking load.

That would give quit a range of loads available...plain base, gas checked, paper patched and something to pop paper / varmints / tin cans with.

    What'cha all think?

I don't have to think about it, the .358 Win is probably the best cast bullet round you can use.
The solid soft lead bullet is undoubtably the best and most satisfactory expanding bullet that has ever been designed. It invariably mushrooms perfectly, and never breaks up. With the metal base that is essential for velocities of 2000 f.s. and upwards to protect the naked base, these metal-based soft lead bullets are splendid.

Forget everything you know about loading jacketed bullets. This is a whole new ball game!

    True that...

Think I could get away with the buckshot for tin can loads? I guess that they are called gallery loads, aren't they. I was also looking at some .357 / 9mm pistol molds for light boolits...

A 160gr Plainbase Roundnose (Lyman 358311) under 11gr of Unique is an awesome Bunny-roller.

I have used Unique and pistol boolits from 180 gr to 200 gr
a fun and accurate load to heavy serious hunting boolits
between 200 gr and 280 gr so as you see it versatile
it seems to have all the ingredients to preform well with cast
and it does but sometime you have to work for it

Thanks for all of the reply's...interesting stuff.

Sooo, here's a question for the 358 clan, What do you think is the "ideal" twist rate? This rifle, if I get to build it, will probably never see a j-word bullet. It will see a bunch of different cast though. It seems that most folks have 1 in 14 or 1 in 16" twist rates.

    I have a 1-12, and a 1-14. Both shoot well.

I don't think you can do much better than a 1:12" twist barrel and good old 368009.

Have been looking for a mold to use with a .35 Gibbs win 70 barrel I got some years ago with a switchbarrel gun. Never mounted the barrel, but would make a great combo set with 8-3/8" M27.... Have the sizing die so really considering giving it a go.

Is RCBS the only source for a new .358 rifle mold?

The Saeco 352 is a 245 gr 358 mold that works well in a 358 Win.

Ditto. This is the most accurate boolit out of my M77 at hunting velocities.

Seems like someone listed one in the "Swappin & Sellin" area a year or three ago. Set a record for listing to sold time. Me, I've never even touched one. Maybe someday.

OK, another question has popped into my head.

How long a barrel would be optimum for the 358Win?

Anything over 22 inches doesn't add much. Less than 20 and it starts to slow down and get loud.

Or I could say 24 inches, that's how long the one on my Rem 700 is.
