Hey Dutchman, I did it! Argie Scope mount

Encouraged by Dutchman after seeing his scope mounts for the Argentine Mauser, he sent me photos and ideas to whittle one out.
1-1/2 days of dinking on the milling machine, I "got-r-done"!

After removing the factory ladder rear sight and doing some measuring, came up with a T style nut to fit in the factory ladder spring dove tail




More measuring, figuring and head scratching to come up with a solidly mounted base for the scope rail


The rail is a Weaver brand rail for the Marlin lever rifle, bought local for 6 bucks

I must have done something right, after reassembling the rifle and putting the bore scope on it, the windage was dead nuts on! A slight elevation adjustment, and we are ready for a trip to the range to see how it works.
The scope is a Leupold VXIII 2.5-8 rifle scope that was rat-holed for a custom rifle I am waiting for completion on, but it has enough eye relief at 5x and under, to use for this purpose in the mean time. I do have to climb my face forward but I didn't have to buy a scope to work up some loads. When $$ comes available I intend to try one of the 2-7 pistol scope dutchman has been using.

now that you have made one, take Dutchman's advice when you get to using a LER psitol scope and make it as low as possible by making your own rails. It will set the pistol scope lower and make using it much more fun.

Now you and Dutchman need to hammer out a mount for the M38 swede. I don't have a 38, but a good friend does. He has looked at Dutchman's m96 swede mount that I have and would like to have something similar.

Now for a suggestion.

You've pretty much mimiced my original 1891/93/95 mount. The 93 and 95 Mauser has a handguard so there can't be any overhang on the back end.

But is there enough room to cut the dovetails directly on your steel insert? This is how to get the absolute lowest 91 Argentine mount in the world... do away with the aluminum Weaver rail. This is what I was saying in email to you.

There are only 2 dimensions you need be aware of for a Weaver rail.
Top of rail to bottom of lower dovetail is .200". The width is .835". Weaver cross slots are 5/32".

The point is your insert can be 1/4" or 5/16" thick and all you'll be using is .200" of it for the dovetail.

Mil-std-1913 uses different cross slots but the general config is the same.




My dovetail fixture is this angle plate that I've since fixed at 45 degrees. The aluminum tooling plate on top is dowel pinned and screwed down. I indicate it to 1/2 thou when setting up. I machine first the top dovetail flat then do the undersize then turn it around and do the other side. I use the DRO and zero the knee dial so I machine to a fixed zero every time and get perfect repeatability.



This shows how I fixed the angle plate for 45 degrees. The mounts laying there are 91/93/95 mounts.



I figured the end cross slot so Weaver QD rings would fit flush with the end of the mount. I think I use .200" as a standard for the next cross slot.



When I'm running the first dovetail I don't measure -- I just stop when I get the ring fit that I want. Then I zero the machine and proceed to carry on.



As the mount design gets lower you need to allow for clearance of the lower side of the rings where they clamp to the dovetail. You can inadvertently go too low and have the ring clamps bump into stuff they shouldn't... that's part of the R&D process that's enjoyable. Mistakes contribute to the superior design.



I can't make the Swede mount any better than this.

I can make the 91 Argentine mount better and the Gewehr 98 mount.

Actually, no bug. I just wanted a scope for load development.
I prefer my scopes higher than most people. I have arthritis in my neck
& it don't move like it should, more straight up is more comfortable for me
I do appreciate the time you spent sending me photos & info.
Hopefully I get to the range tomorrow and try it out.
