Here are just a small list of services that Google is involved in for hundreds of thousands or millions of users:

email, for huge numbers of businesses, not to mention all the individual gmail users. My personal domain is hosted on google apps.

Navigation, not just for those nifty maps on web pages. Lots of people depend on google to give them directions. Android phones for instance.

Voice calls for those that have google voice. I don't use it for my primary, but my lov-guns number is used for most of my classified adds.

Docs, website hosting, chat, patents....The list is very long.

You probably don't realize how much your life is impacted by them. Google uses a very open architecture, meaning many things you do use that you don't perceive as internet related could be unavailable/diminished capacity.
I doubt that Google will shut down paying customers services. The lawsuites would never end. As for the free services, who cares. Looks like SOPA / PIPA is dying anyway, seems that people raised enough of a ruckus calling their Congressman that SOPA is now stopped. http://www.examiner.com/computers-in...use-kills-sopa

    SOPA is now stopped.
Yeah, and Obama was going to veto NDAA, too.

Like I care? If the internet dies I'll hit up my satellite provider for a refund. I still have a library card. My Open Office suite will work without internet access so I'm good to go.

Well, Wiki did actually do it for the entire day and Google did black out their logo:

Personally, I say more power to them and the reason they are blacking out is to show people what could happen under the proposed legislation. Lets be honest here folks the law as written would allow the .gov to permanently black out this cast boolits forum permanently and without legal recourse if they wanted to without a court order just because they wanted too. The internet is getting out of control as far as the .gov are concerned and they don't like all the info spreading so easily it threatens their power base and they want to but the brakes on that and we all know that deep down all but a few politicians on both sides of the isle would prefer unarmed peasants instead of armed citizens and all this spreading of knowledge on how to make your own just ain't good for their long term aspirations.

I agree the government wants control of everything but blacking out ones logo for a day is about as effective as pi**sing on a house fire.

Chat should be blazing tomorrow if all those sights take the day off.

Yes I agree that Google's form of protest is pretty anemic to say the least. I do use Wiki as a reference (with a grain of salt or two of course) and I think they are a little more serious about it with blacking out their whole site for a whole day.

Google is doing as you say but I think Wiki although not using a fire hose at least has the garden hose out. I agree that a lot of the sites are left-ist orientated but seriously speaking keeping the .gov from stifling free speech is one of the few things that both the far left and the far right (me) can agree on and I would much prefer they devote time and effort to something like this then some of their other causes at least on this one they might do some good instead of messing things up even more.

Kind of like the "occupy" crowd. Some of them are now camping out outside the white-house fence. Took them long enough to figure out where the problem really is and maybe if they had started out there and done a better job of keeping their noses (figuratively speaking in reference to the other stuff) clean they would be viewed more favorably.

Heck; how about a camping out in all of D.C. (the whole place if full of the problem) and casting boolits and loading ammo on benches outside of the tents. Now that would be the real way to send a message.

Fox news had about a 2 minute report on this tonight on the Sheppard Smith hour. He said that "SOME" congress critters have withdrawn support for this bill! Looks like some didn't really know just what they were actually supporting.

Looks like those that seem so smart only because they can check wikki, to get a short heads-up on just about anything have had to keep their mouths shut for one day.

Beware of file sharing sites. Your chances of picking up an unwanted virus is really good.

I don't appose the enforcement of the law against those who steal the works of others for their own profit or to strip the original author his/her opportunity to profit from their work.

The proposed legislation is not, however, about the needful dealing with such varmints who rip of others work it is an internet control law disguised as an anti-pirate law. Seriously why do you think they made it how many hundreds of pages thick an anti-pirate law could fit on a page or two you only make it that big to hide the "other stuff" in it.

The problem with allowing ANYONE to censor anything is it usually gets approval based on something most of us feel should be gone anyway, BUT once they have the power they just keep on censoring based on thier particular bias. We had computer censorship in Govt. offices to "stop people from looking at porn"---so OK most people had no problem with that, BUT soon there were other "key" words that blocked access to information I sometimes needed to do my job. I got frustrated because I could not look up information on Gunsmithing as a career for a cliant and I got so PO'd I went to the boss and asked what would happen if I made a finding that the WCB had to send a worker to Colorado for two years based on "that was what the worker said would fix his employment problem"? Needles to say MY access got upgraded quite quickly! SO---while I can agree to some extent with those who disparage this "protest", if we all do nothing we will all lose in the end.
