    9mm w/o cannelure for 38/357?

I searched and really didn't find what an answer.

I have a 9mm bullet that casts large enough for 38/357. From what I have seen, most 38/357 bullets/boollits all seem to have some sort of cannelure on them for crimping. The 9mm bullet mold I have does not, just a lube groove.

Can I use this bullet and crimp on it even though it does not have a cannelure groove, or do I need to go get something tha does?

    Thanks,

    Ken

I believe taper crimp dies are now available for .38/357

    HI,
    LUBE IT OF COURSE.
Yes you can use it , if it fits your gun it will possibly shoot accurately. If it is to small it will probably lead your bore & not be very accurate.

You MAY have a problem of the case backing away from the boolit under recoil in heavy .357 Magnum loads with a taper crimp ... you may not. You can also roll crimp the boolit and see how it shoots. If it's accurate despite the slight deformation a roll crimp will make then you're good to go there too.

You've got to lube the boolit.

I would not crimp it. If you don't have a taper crimp I would just set my crimp die to get rid of the flare on the case mouth and be done with it. Recoil from lighter 9MM bullets is minimal and there is very little inertia for the bullet to walk out. If it's the truncated cone 9mm bullet they are very accurate in .38's if sized correctly. My .38 will consistently group less than 2"@ 50 yds with either the Lee 120TC or RCBS 124 TC 9MM bullets.

Set your seating die so that the mouth of the case is just past the front lube groove then adjust to crimp just enough to remove the flare.

Not too difficult to crimp the mouth into the lead as long as you don't get crazy with it.

If it was easy, anybody could do it.

If the boolit in question (which is?) walks you can seat it deeper in a 38/357 case and crimp over the start of the ogive or taper. I've not had a problem with 9mm boolits (I use the Lee 356-125-2R and the Lyman 356-634) walking in my 38 Special loads. Don't forget that seating deeper will raise pressure which can be reduced by lowering the charge.
Just because change doesn't make a difference doesn't mean that change is bad.

I regulary use taper crimp dies in 38, 357 & 44 mag target loads with loads under 1000 fps with cast bullets with or without crimp groves ! IMO i would use a dedacated taper crimp die for your cast bullet in revolver cases .

    +1

You can taper crimp or roll crimp over the ogjive and have a perfectly usable round albeit with a little bit less case capacity cuz you'll be seating it deeper. I do that when loading 45 ACP bullets in my 454 Cassul.

Just read the above. I shoot the Colt .38 spl Detective Special with the RCBS 124 TC sized 0.357 and with approx 4.5gr powder (similar Unique), is a very pleasant and accurate load. I use the Lyman 9mmP taper crimp die, and with its taper (vs. straight wall of 38 spl), a moderate crimp removes and tensions case onto bullet front band without sizing down rear/base band of bullet at all!

I use cast from Lees 356-120-TC all the time in my 38s. I just seat as williamwaco suggests and put a moderate roll crimp on it. I also use that boolit in loading my 39 Colt Shorts - on those, I just seat and put a taper crimp on them. In my 38s, I've never had a problem with them jumping at all. 357s and heavier charges might be a different story.

Ive shot the Lyman 356402 boolit in both 9mm, and in 38/357 Magnum with no problems.

I have also fired the Lee TL356-124-2R 9mm Tumble Lube mold sized at .358 alongside of the Lyman 358311 in 38 Special..

The Lee 9mm TL boolit shot surprising well from my Model 60 Smith & Wesson Chief's Special.

Both the Lyman TC, and the Lee 9mm TL boolit work well for me in the 38 Special cartridge.

I like using the collet style lee factory crimp die that I got from Ranch Dog. Use it in 357, case length specific, so I do not, nor have figured out if I could use it in 38. Have them for all my revolver calibers. Don't always need them, but when I do, they're NICE! Lee does runs of them from time to time now.

Another vote for crimping over the bullet shoulder/beginning of the ogive. Works for me!
Cast is an adjective, a noun and a verb. Cast works as both imperative and past tense without any additional letters or helping verbs.
