I know that for at least the last 10-12 years that the Walmarts around here close ammo sales between 10pm and 6am.

Always wanted to go to W/M at like 3AM and buy the following items:
    Ski mask
    Latex gloves
    Duct tape
    Large knife
    Shovel
    Rope
    Gas can
    Shotgun shells

Wonder if that'd raise any eyebrows?

At 3AM you would probably have to scan the items yourself as most of the cashiers are not working then. Also you put your bills lnto a slot which goes to a safe. 0 chance of a robbery as no cash is available

Last week I bought some 22 mag and at the sports counter, at check out I was asked if this was for pistol ammo. Now these were really being use in a rifle but I do have a 22 mag pistol, I said no but ask what makes the difference, answer was that they had to walk pistol ammo out the door not rifle. So how honest do they think people really are. I have rifles in most of my pistol calabers. Now I don't care if they want to walk me out and carry my stuff , It just makes no sence to me.
    Thanks Nick

I suppose it would depend on what the cashier looked like as to what my answer would be. lol

I never buy handgun ammo at Walmart. Actually I never buy pre rolled ammo. I used to buy .22 ammo but have a stash of it now and will not pay the going rate for it. Before last election I bought the federal bulk packs for $7.97. Now they are $19!

We have no local gun shops or hardware stores that sell ammo or components anymore. Nobody in my county sold reloading tools or supplies(except shotgun) ever ceptin for used stuff that got traded in at the gun/pawn shop that is also gone.

I do believe the internet put life back into the shooting world!

Both of the Wal-Marts that I use here have taken out their self operated check-outs. People just simply didn't use them.

Sounds like someone is just lazy. If there is no one on duty in sporting goods with keys, there is always some kind of manager they can summon to take care of you.

Probably because they can see you don’t have a rifle with you. People in the store don’t make the rules. They have to follow them. Some in risk management probably imagines a robber might come in, buy ammo, load a handgun he brought in with him, and rob the store. For all we know it may have happened, sometime, somewhere.

"All right, but I will have to ring them up back here or walk you to the checkers up front if you get these."

"So I'm okay going up front with just the 500 12 gauge shells, just not the 20 gauge?"

    "Yep."

    "Why is that?"

"Because the 20 gauge shells came from behind the counter. We keep all the dangerous shells locked up out of reach of the public."

    "Okay...well then..."
"All the dangerous stuff" Its about the same at my wally-word. They have a chain across the end of the counter to stop ppl from getting behind the counter. Now they have about 5 foot of cleaning and gun stuff. 2 foot of it is past the chain line. I needed a bag of cleaning patch that just happened to be over the chain line. The guy started giving me flack for reaching over. Told him dont stock to supply's over that far then. Again reached a foot over the line grabbed the patches. "sir you cant do that". with patches in hand told him to !! !!!! !!! !!!! and put'em in the cart and continued shopping.

I wonder if any of that has to do with shoplifting prevention.

Chinese Crappola Mart in California a few years back got caught not properly filling out the required Socialist paper work on firearm sales and lost their license to sell. Turned out that it was nothing but very poorly trained sales people and not any intent to decieve or cricumvent the law. They didn't appeal and still sell no guns.

LA city has a law that requires fingerprints to purchase ammo, not the county just the city. I can go to say my local Big 5 (in LA County) and buy shot gun shells etc with no problem but they do walk it to the register. Buy the same thing in the next town over (within LA city) and they want finger prints to buy it.

All the more reason to roll your own, and pick up components while you are on vacation.

That is usually regulated by statute.
