How Old Were You When You Got Your First Deer

When I started to hunt deer at the age of 16, there were not very many around.
I did not get my first deer until I was 24.

Cant remember for sure my exact age. But according to stories told in the family I think I shot my first rabbit when I was six. The first deer I shot would have been a red deer.

I got one my first year out at 14

Season was Fri & Sat buck only localy and there were not many around

But I had a new 12 gau shotgun with a slug barrel that I paid for with trapping $$

I bought 2 boxs of slugs and used 2 to sight it in

I sat on the fence row between our corn feild and the neibors woods
A small 5 point walked up and looked at me
    At 10' I got it

Took 4 more years to get the next one

I got my first during my second year hunting deer. At that time you couldn't hunt big game until age 16, so I was 17. Nice big mulie 6x8, 27" wide, 23" tall. It weighed just over 230 lbs with the internals removed. Took him at just over 250 yrds with my dad's .303 British.

Had it been 1" wider or taller, it would have won me a new .30-30 in the high-school big buck contest. As it turned out, that 1 inch was the difference between 1st place and 4th place, so I even missed out on the 3rd place binoculars.

Kicked this big boy out of a flock of sheep. As soon as I got him down, saw 3 others hiding in there that were bigger than he was. I guess they figure they are pretty safe hanging around sheep.

I was 14 my 3rd season . He was a real nice 4x4 mulie . Its been 6-7 yr since I took the last 1. I only get in the lottery about every other yr or so .

I don't remember exactly what year I got my first deer, but I do remember the day I saw my first deer track. Dad was working the bottoms and shut the John Deere down running to the house. We thought something was wrong, but Dad had found the first set of deer tracks on the farm. That would be in April 50 years ago this year.

I cheated when I voted. When I was 18, deer were hard to find where I lived, so I ended up shooting a moose. A moose is just a big deer, right?

Ill say 14 because thats was the legal age limit in MI at the time but most 14 year olds were about a foot taller then me if that gives you any idea.

I started at about 14 with my dad in a group of adults who drove hunted exclusively. Finally got my first at 26 as a stand hunter. I have never done anything but stand hunting since. I prefer to get up close an personal. And use 100% humane kill shots.
personal opinion- I find it a sad commentary when you look at a hunt by the # of boxes of shells you used versus the shell that you used.

Me too! Wern't any firearms in our household when I was growing up!! Even though my Grandfather was a Cop and my father was a Turret Gunner in a B-24 in WW II, I never handled a gun till I was 18 when I bought my first (Win M-12) shotgun. Since then, I have more than made up for lost time.

My first deer was taken with a bow and was a button buck, I mistook for a doe. Didn't start gun hunting till a year or so later. Was hunting in Michigan's Thumb Area which, at the time, was shotgun and or muzzleloader only. Couldn't hit the broad side of a barn with the M-12 and slugs so I bought a LH 50 cal. Tenn. Mtn. Rifle from Dixie Gun Works. Harvested my first gun kill with a round ball. Deer went 50 yds and the round ball was recovered just under the skin on the off side and looked like a cork screw.

Since then I still prefer the bow. The weather is much better and the season is longer. Now a days, I don't care if I'm successful, I just enjoy being out in the woods!

thirty years have gone by, I think I've bought 9 or 10 tags
I still have never shot a deer.

I was 15, shot a half rack whitetail in Michigan on my parents property with my bow. I shot several more out of that tree, after a couple of years than I moved 100 yards away to another tree where I took 3 bucks and a doe and my brother took his first 2 deer with his bow a buck and a doe in the matter of 3 years.

I was sixteen. I was backpacked with a friend into what is now the condor refuge above Ojai California. We were admiring the view from the mountaintop just above the fog when there he was at the bottom of the cliff, a forkie. Carried him out whole (but gutted) on a post between our backpacks six miles back to the Volkswagon bug.

    Good morning
Grew up in SW Michigan where there was no deer hunting. When I was 15 (1966) was walking home from the Paw Paw River (Riverside) at sundown with my Remington 514 when 3 does came up on the RR embankment where I was at about 25 feet. I leveled the 514 at the base of the ear of the largest doe, flicked off the safety and realised I did not need another run in with the constable. So I said "Bang" out loud and the 3 does walked away. Never went deer hunting till 1989 when we lived in Indiana near Perrysville after our 1st time down here in Peru. Sitting up in a maple with a caliber.58 Zuoave (Navy Arms) popped a doe at 10 yards. Shot alot of deer with that .58. Next time up north there (1994) a very kind feller in Illinois gave my his old Bear#45 recurve. Been recurving corn crunchers ever since with the occasional revolver interlude thrown in.
