MM that means a lot buddy. At 69 years of age I will be lucky to have another 10 to 15
years of productive life.I keep trying to learn all I can, & intern share what I have learned
than carry it to the grave.

I feel I,m a good man & have my own values. But people do what they do,& I don't feel it is my place
to slander anyone on any web site.I was told I was banned & if I did not know why I was dumber
    than they thought.

That hurt,s that people can't respect my feelings, but I have not lived this long with out looking ahead
& knowing I did nothing wrong.

by payment in advance.I hate doing it this way, but it is the only way I can.Cash, check or money order will work.

    Hello all,

For those of you using a ball mill to grind the ingredients to very fine condition, what kind of balls do you use, ceramic, steel, lead ?? Is size critical ? Where do you source them ? Thanks.

In the Harbor Freight mill I had trouble with balls pushing the powder to the ends where it would cake up. I bought some copper tubing and filled short sections with lead, end of problem. I'd sure stay away from steel, too much chance of sparks.

interesting. I don't have that problem w/ 58 cal RB's. I'd fill it with LEE300 45 cal boolits before I tried the copper, but thanks for the tip. In case it ever does happen in the future.

I wonder if anybody has tried one of those new Frankfort Arsenal Rotary Tumblers (heck of an acronym) as a ball mill yet? They're pretty fast and reasonably powerful, it might work.

This is what I did as well. Worked good for making powdered aluminum too but took like a week.

They are about $150 from Graf's or other places. Work really well for cleaning your brass cartridge cases, might be tough enough to be a ball mill.

I have used my Thumbler high speed tumbler and it worked well but it is a pain to clean before I wet tumble brass. Plus I usually don't make that big of batches. That thing could probably do 5lbs at a time.

If you have a feed store in your area they may have potassium nitrate and sulfur sold by the pound. Especially the places that are more old school and sell stuff in bulk. Works for me.

Dextrin is added to the mix when making screened powder.

At first I wasn't impressed with the prices but as you bulk up the price per pound drops dramatically. I wish I knew about them sooner.

There are various references to Ulrich Bretscher's Black Powder Page but the links are dead. I consider this an excellent reference so I am posting a link to the page in the Internet Archive (Wayback Machine). as of this date this link works:

What are people using for a ball mill to combine the sulfur and charcoal with? Would a rubber drum rock tumbler work?
