ideal 358242

I have a Ideal 358242 mold that looks a little different than the normal 358242. It has two grease grooves instead of one. Is this a 38 special mold or 9mm?

Should work for both. Size as needed.

The mold was sold in two wts, done by removing one groove and band. IIRC 90 gr and
120 gr. My 90 gr version casts too small for .38s, and marginal for my .380.

I have both versions and they cast large enough for either a 9mm or .38 Special. I use the one bander for my shooter buddy's .380 and the two bander for the 9mm./beagle

I was thinking it looked like a good 9mm boolit. Too bad its just a single cavity.

It is a very good 9mm boolit. I use it over 4 gr AA#2 in a cz75.

1. What was this bullets originally designed for.
2. I have not casted any yet but i hope its big enough for some fun in the 38spl
If it casts a little small I might try them in the 380

That said any old load data for this mold ?

Originally designed for the Colt's 38 automatic.

I have double cavity molds in both grain weights. The 92 grain works very well in the 380 and I also use it in some of my 38 Colt Short and 38 Colt Long loadings - can easily be used in 38 / 357 as well. My blocks drop at .358 - I just tumble lube them in alox and paste wax. The 121 grain version I have used in 9mm and it is an excellent boolit. I also use it in my 38 Colt Long, 38 special and 357. In 9mm, I just load it to the COAL that feeds well in whatever semi I am using it in and taper crimp it. I wold have to say that both grain versions of that particular mold are probably two of my favorites for what I load.

+1 for the Lyman/Ideal 358242. The NOE clone 359-121-RN is also superb. The 121 gr. version is fantistic in 9MM, 38 Spl and .357, all sized .358. My CZ75 loves them over Blue Dot 6.5 gr. at COAL 1.065". The 90 gr. Lyman mold I picked up was under sized but I got that corrected by Eric at HollowPointMolds and it's my go-to for .380 sized .358. The 121 gr. over Promo 4.2 gr in a 38 Spl case is a tack driver in both pistol and rifle.

I have the 121 grain version as well. Seating it with one lube groove exposed for use in my 9mm pcc that requires a long oal to feed properly. Loaded with both lube grooves inside for my 9mm pistols. Shoots very well out of both platforms, really like it better than the tc version.

What do you do for the roll crimp for 38spl, I will be running these on the soft or slow side, starting load velocities out of a 2" revolver.
