    FR-8 sight range

Liking the looks of the FR-8 but have a question. With the 3 position rear aperture just how much elevation range is there particularly for cast boolits? Is it a stretch to hope to get one to work to 200 yds. with moderate cast loads? Can you fine tune it with the front sight if you do find a good working 200 yd. load?

    Thanks!

Ya know, I still have no idea what the different apertures are supposed to be for, so I'll watch this and see if any can answer. In my case I lucked out and my load of 13.0 Red Dot behind the RCBS 30-180FN hits about POA at 60ish yards with the left peep IIRC.

Do an internet search for "Ceteme front sight adjustment tool." The same tool was used for the FR-8 front sight. I picked one up from a distributor a couple of years ago. Trouble is, I can't remember who it was; and since I had to have a new computer built this summer I lost all the favorites I had saved with the link.

The front sight has plenty of adjustment for any load you may want to shoot. 200 yards should not be any problem with the correct tool. The front sight is also used to adjust windage. The front post is offset to one side on the threaded shaft; and when you turn it the point of impact moves from right to left or left to right depending on which direction you are turing the post. This is happening simultaneously while you are raising or lowering the POI so once you get close to the desired point of impact be sure to make small adjustments when you are firing groups to determine the point of impact.

Before making front sight adjustments, be sure to loosen the small set screw located on the front bottom of the front sight base. Once a slight adjustment is made snug the screw back down before shooting another group to determine the new POI.

Also, I had to turn the front sight up a fair amount (lowering POI) to get the elevation on @ 100 yds using the 210 grn NOE 316299 sized to .314" @ 2,180 fps.

    Hope this helps,

Thanks guys, that does help. Other question I have now on the FR-8 is how do they respond to sling pressure since the sling attaches directly to the loop/ring on the side of the front sight base?

Can't answer that one. Never put a sling on my FR-8.

Shooting the NOE 316299 sized .314" pushed by 45 grns of IMR-4007ssc and capped by a CCI large rifle primer. 2,180 fps out of the short FR-8 barrel and more accurate than I can hold.

Staged photo. Taken during a break in the actual shooting.

That is correct. I was pushing 1850 fps with a 311299 in my FR8 with original sights. Zeroed the V notch at 100 yards and the 300 yard setting was close at 200 yards. I made a sight adjusment tool, wasn't difficult if you're handy and have the tools to do it with. Windage was way off to the side on mine and I never was happy with the sights on the FR8, the CETME or the G3. I cut the rear sight off, D&T'd for a Lyman SME receiver sight. I also took the garbage off the front and put a M14 flash suppressor and front sight on the barrel. Extremely satisfied as I got it as a shooter to make a scout rifle out of. Not suggesting you do the same, simply stating what I did. makes about as perfect a "scout rifle" as I think Cooper intended.

The safety Nazis strike again. No way I'm voting for you for Prez if you won't allow us the latitude to make our own decisions on stuff like that.

I haven't as of yet adjusted mine as of yet, been shooting wolf stuff, just to get the feel of her, it's ok ammo , for on the cheap, been loading cast 314299, ya I know is a wee bit large but works sized, to .310 back by 24 grains 2400 , take a 6 o' clock hold on a standard 100 yrd slow fire 22 NRA target and hits inch lowbelow orange bulls eye, useing the funcky 100 meter rear site, swing site to the right for 200 meters and prints 5" high above black, forgot to mention was shooting at 50 yards off bench, with hand loads of 147 gr fmj ( got **** load ) and imr 4064 shoots about same , really shines with nosler balistic tips 165, and 41 grains 4064 high about 3" at 50, got a bit more work to really settle down on something, she's been fun, thing seems to recoil but not like I thought it would, about the same as my isreali Mauser 7.62 maybee a little less
