    Cool

I have 18 Ruger #1s in various configuations ranging in caliber from .22 Hornet to .416 Rigby, and yes, one is a 45-70. I also have a custom made "walkabout" rifle based on a #1 action, custom wood, and a Remington barrel in .223 Remington. Add to that a Browning B-78 and some off brand rolling block based on an action and parts from the old Numrich outfit, now called Gun Parts Corp.
There is a gun show coming up later in the month, and if I get lucky, I can find another #1 or B-78 to add to the collection.
Before anyone asks, yes, i do hunt with my single loaders.

I have to vote you as THE ruger single shot man. Your collection is the kind I am trying for. At the moment I have 5 Ruger singles. 4 #3's (45-70, 375, 30-40 & 44 mag) and a #1 (6mm Rem). I am still after #3's in 22 hornet and 223 to round out that collection and of course all the #1's I can find. I would love to get to the point I can get #1's in duplicate and have them rebarreled into calibers they did not offer....

    cheap single shots

As I'm a sucker for an inexpensive gun (safe is full of Mosin-Nagants and Turk Mausers), I bought a pair of Rossi's, one is a 223, the other is 45/410. I really enjoy the 45, although it has more freebore than any Weatherby (a 410 shell is somewhat longer than a 45 Colt). If I find the time to figure out a good load, I plan to go deer hunting with it this fall as pistol caliber rifles are now legal in Indiana (NO MORE SHOTGUN!!!). Anybody have one of the little Rossi's, I'd like to know I'm not the only one........

    some other #3's out there

Back in 1982, I had 2 Ruger #3's in .223 re-bored to .25 caliber and chambered for .257 Roberts. I gave one to a friend in Wyoming, with which he has harvested all of his deer, antelope and elk with eve since.
I took mine back to Alaska and used it for caribou, for which it worked just fine.
Last year I had another #3 in .223 and had Dan Pederson at www.cutrifle.com rebore it to .308 WCF, with 1-11" twist, for use with 165 Barnes TSX bullets. A sweet shooter and most accurate this one is.
Also have 2 .30-40 Krag #3's that will be working up 10 gr unique loads with this winter
with 110 gr bullets, to around 1550 fps, for small game loads. Will work with heavier 170-200 gr cast loads as well.
I just like the Ruger #3's...
regards to the others who like/enjoy #3's out there...

I have seen a grand total of two #3's in .30-40 for sale and bought them both. Excellen lead shooters with 4759, 4895, and 3100. For the most fun you can have with your pants on try a 311291 sized .311 and lubed but with no gas check and load over 6 grains of red dot. Will shoot one big hole at 50 yards till you get tired of it. Also a size "O" shot lubed with liquid alox seated 1/2 way over 3 grns of red dot is a great 25 yard load and is minute of squirrel head out to 50 yards.

Ask any gun pusher who sold a lot of #3's in teh 70's and 80's how many they get back in on trades. Them that has them is holding on to them.

Great rifle and cartridge. Loads from a round ball at 1000 fps to 200 grn bullet at 2000+ fps and a big ole rim to control headspace. Size just enough of the neck to hold the bullet and wathc the magic happend.

    Back to lurking now.
