.50-70 Black Powder Paper Patched Bullet 200 meter range test.

.50-70 Black Powder Paper Patched Bullet 200 meter range test.

This week I tested my first Paper Patched .50-70 bullets for reliability and accuracy. I had 3x 5-rounds loads with (3) different black powder granulates. The results speak for them selfs.

The 2Fg loads came of high and erratic. The 4Fg loads came of low and the 3Fg hit the “sweet spot”. Not only did the paper patched kept my barrel nice and (easy to) clean but is gives you a whole different few how they did it in the past. I do all so reload my. 45-120SS with paper patched bullets (for quit some time), but i never had the need for my 50-70 to be paper patched. Just for the fun of it i did the test....

    Load data:
    Powder: 55 grains (Swiss)
    Primer: Fed 215
    Bullet: 400gr (ave)
    Mould: Lyman 508656BV

The rifle used was one of my Antique Remington Rolling Blocks.

The paper patched bullet used can be seen on the far lower right side on the card.

    Swiss 1 = 4Fg
    Swiss 2 = 3Fg
    Swiss 3 = 2Fg
    Swiss 4 = 1.5Fg
    Swiss 5 = 1Fg

What i actually used was the Swiss nr: 2, 3 and 4
    Sorry for the confusion

Swiss powder is currently the only black powder available over here. We don't use the American Fg as a standard due to that so often any more.
