what it goes for new. This is not the wire type on rolls, it is sold in sticks that resemble a wrench

hi in tin they will keep the shine.
Around here, they go for about $20 new, if you can still find them. I've acquired quite a few of them on eBay when the price was right, especially if one end was partially used the discount is better. Of course, if you get someone selling it as "vintage" or "collectible" expect the same kind of pacing as pewter classified as such.

Even the pictures of fake pewter make me jealous. In 9 years I've only found 2 candlesticks and a commemorative platter. Just a tiny bit over a pound and they cost me over $8.
    Information not shared. is wasted.

    Lead based Pewter

I ran across some low end, lead based Pewter. These looked like newer commemorative plates, and bent easily, but no noise. It was darker than normal Pewter and it scratched with your fingernail. It felt heavier than Pewter should be. On the back was a hallmark:

An angel usually mean Pewter. There was a hook that also had the same hallmark, but funny thing was the hook was not soldered to the plate, but glued.

I melted them down, and tested for hardness and got 12 (13 in 24 hours). I guestimate this is 50/50 or 40/60 (Sn/Pb).

This is the second time in a couple of weeks I have run into this. The other time was a figurine that was unmarked that had similar lead content.

Does the angel stamp always mean pewter or some variation? I've found plates that seemed really high in lead all the way too something I couldn't bend without cracking.

I've had several variations of the beaded angel on dozens of plates. Almost all of them were the high relief wall hanger type. Only once were they not pewter. The ones that weren't pewter were very brittle and didn't melt until over 700 degrees. I posted on it several pages back.

Edit, it was a lot of pages back. Post 396:

Generally speaking, anytime I see an angel that sticks out from the surface instead of recessed in the surface like typical touchmarks makes me suspicious. The pic in post 1123 should make you look harder. Guild workers take great pride in their work and that angel doesn't look like the maker cared very much. That's probably why you noticed lead in the mix.

I always liked Jefferson cups. No hammer work, just drop them in the pot.

Anyone familiar with Chinese Pewter? I found a thick 1 pound soap dish for $2.48, no hallmark, just a sticker with a manufacturers code and a description of "Pewter Soap Dish" and "Made in China". I was skeptical at first but it was weighted right, clearly was poured into a mold. It melted down like Pewter.

This is actually the first Pewter piece I ever found that was made in China. It was plated with a light gold-ish color, but the metal under looked like Pewter. I was wondering if it may contain lead, why else would it be plated instead of polished

The Chinese pewter I've found has had marks in Chinese characters. No idea what they actually mean, but anything I've ever found with no marks and a paper sticker was "not pewter." I'd suggest you add a little of your mystery metal to your next melt and see what happens

I had the pot set at 500 degrees, it seemed to melt just like pewter. I was still skeptical so I melted it alone, and have the ingot stamped with a X.

The soap dish was also too big for my pot and I had to take a hammer to it, it was pretty soft like pewter, although I would not say quite as soft as I am used to. There was what I thought was a lot of dross after I fluxed it, some of it was the plating I'm sure, I think all I can say is it is "Pewter-ish" at this point.

Picked up more pewter at a yard sale. About 5 pounds total including the added weight in the salt shakers.

All told I spent $18 at this yard sale. Some for pewter and some for a box of tools:

The two sets of taps alone retail for over $160. So I'm not complaining about the price for the pewter.

I'd have paid $18 for just the pewter. That's some fine tools as a bonus!

Couple pieces from the flea market, Holland pewter. They seemed weighty, and. Got them both for $5. Came in at almost three pounds, not much less with the wood removed. Same hallmark on both.
(Corn mold from same place, $2. )
