But if I could modify the Daily Bread tray to say "Give Us This Day Our Daily Boolits", then everyone on the forum would want it

Drill a hole in it and mount it on the wall. When your out hunting again and trying to decide if something is pewter or not, you can have an image in your mind of " No More Of My Daily Bread". I've got mine.

The foundries in York make lots of short run commemoratives. You might just have a product that would sell...

I drank a shot of the pewter kool-aid, landed about 7 lbs for $36 along with a few nice aluminum ash trays for pewter molds.

Those RWP trays should last a lifetime so they're probably worth keeping for something. Another RWP item that seems to be common in thrift stores are commemorative plates that look like these.....
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/VINTAGE-WILT...item3395835bff
They have the same pitted metal look on the bottom, and with a town/city/state with a date usually. There are pewter plates that look very similar though, but they don't have any designs on them and they have an "International Pewter" stamp, which seems to be placed in a hard to notice spot on the bottom.

Got this one with 25% off for $2.41 out the door. Weighs 19.8 oz. Guys, pewter will come in all shapes and forms. Don't just search for picture frames and vases/plates/cups.

Absolutely nothing wrong with experienced scroungers branching out, but hallmarked tableware is the safest stuff for the new guy to pick up. And that was the premise when I started this thread. Congratulations on the score!

I just picked up all 10 on Craigslist for $9. I am not 100% sure these are pewter. The metal is soft and brittle. I managed to break one of the leaf off easily. Hopefully I did not waste $9.

Update: I heated it with a pen torch and it melted fine. The color of the melted pewter changed from dark gray to a light aluminum color. I think this is real pewter

New Update: I don't think this is pewter. It has a low melting temperature, but the color is not right. It has a gray lead color instead of the light silver color with the golden tint. Most likely it is lead mixed with some other alloy. The word "pewter" on the box most likely signifies the color and not the alloy.

I was cutting up my pewter stash and came across this pitcher. It feels like pewter and melts fast from a torch, but it has some kind of coating on it. You can see how it fractures in the second picture. Any idea if it is good to use?

I've never seen anything that was marked "genuine pewter" that was not. I have melted items with similar coatings. It was a gummy mess in the pot. Never burned at the temperatures I use...

I too have come across that "coating" on some items. It was mainly on the older ones and I scooped it out of the melt as dross. At first I tried to mix it in with the melt, but it just clumped up so I discarded it as part of the fluxing process. I think alot of it is dirt and what ever was used to shine/preserve the pewter over the years. Melt and flux. It's pewter underneath.

It wasn't a slam dunk as I had to visit 4 thrift stores before finding this set. Saw a few items but most were priced to high. The stores were along the way to a place I was traveling to so didn't go far out of the way to look for this stuff. Keep an eye out though as the thrift stores are obviously taking new stock in all the time.

they still have this vase, on closer inspection it is cast(had air holes in it from bubbles) the guiding is thin brass sheet glued to the side

Total for the day: 5 1/4 lbs for $9.50 or $1.81/lb

One caveat: I may have overlooked it but don't recall seeing the last hallmark in this thread. Can someone confirm that pewter from R.H. Macy & Co Inc is the good stuff we want?

Macy's buys pewter from other makers and either has it proprietary stamped or overstamps the existing mark. Examples of both are already in this thread, but yours is different than the ones I've found before. It's good alloy.

    Thanks for the additions!
