I've had decent luck at Goodwill on 50% off days. You can't do it to make money (IMHO) but it is like an egg hunt. My 7 & 10 year old kids even have an eye for it. Fun family time that it also productive (sort of).

After buying some smelted/weighed pewter from the S&S forum here I sort of lost interest in looking for pewter. Five pounds will last a LONG time at the rate I use it.

Anyway, I watched the kids today so the wife could sneak off for a few hours to go shopping; she returned with about 3/4 pound of old english pewter. She paid too much for it, but.....she brought me pewter. How cool is that?

A good woman is hard to find. Congratulations!

Now you need to get some pictures for the thread...

I've been a little lax updating my thread... Scrounging was scarce over the holidays, but recently has gotten a bit better. Mostly the same old stuff, but I have stumbled onto a few new hallmarks. So without further ado...

A 10 inch tall pitcher. Neat design, 1 pound 11 ounces...

    A 7 inch vase, 14.6 ounces...

Two small bowls and a plate. Clockwise from the upper left, 5 inch bowl (5.2 ounces), 5.5 inch bowl (5.2 ounces), and a 5.5 inch plate (4.3 ounces.)

I had wondered if you had given up the scrounging, since I hadn't seen an ad lately.

Well there were a few factors in play for my moratorium... Jsizemore has been selling off some of his stash and we have been informally "sharing the wealth" as it were. I also had a couple of folks PM me and then scrounging dried up for a bit and POOF! I was pretty much wiped out for a time. But fortunes change. I have some ingots to cast and some weighing to do. You haven't seen the last of my ads.

My Goodwill store is schizo. I was in a few weeks ago, all they had was a little, glass bottomed tankard for $2.99. I passed. Went back in on 1/2 price day and it was gone and nothing new. Went in today, bought one just like it, a Towle, for 99 cents.

Goodwill is funny that way. That said, your average glass bottom tankard at $2.99 will still net you less than $6 a pound. If you are in immediate need, it beats the heck out of home center solder prices...

A few smaller items with hallmarks I haven't seen before...

A 10 inch pierced cookie tray. Only 13.1 ounces. I suppose it was pretty enough, but I would have rather had the extra metal.

A 3 inch creamer weighing in at 6.2 ounces.

    And a 6.5 X 10 inch oval tray at 9.8 ounces.

ID:	95919Didn't recall seeing the Pfaltzgraff hallmark in here. This one got stamped off center on a 4.5 ounce Jefferson cup that is one of 2 items to survive on my bench. It's just kinda handy to toss small parts into when I'm working on something. LOL The other keeper is a simple 7.5 ounce solid bottom Sheffield stein that serves the same purpose.

Just like WW scrounging, pewter scrounging is a lot of disappointment and a few scores. Keep looking and you will find some at a reasonable price.

And it never hurts to point out to sellers that their prices are unreasonable and make an offer. The worst that can happen is they say no.

Ever since the consignment shops opened here, pewter prices have all gone crazy. Some one in consignment priced theirs as collectables, and now everything is the same, regardless of what it is. Funny how none of it is selling. I've seen the same 4 plates and 2 cups at a pawn shop for 3 years. I made an offer and explained that it was just tin, and nothing collectable, but got turned down at $5./lb.

When looking for pewter, I have a per lb price I'm willing to pay for pewter. If a dealer doesn't want to sell at that price, I tell them thanks and move on. When I do find stuff at the right price I make it a point to let the dealers see me with my finds. I buy any of their damaged stuff at the per lb price and when they get tired of hauling their collectables back and forth they eventually meet the price. At the end of the day, I might pay a little more if I payed a little less somewhere else to establish a working relationship with a dealer. I never argue price.

Reminds me of flea bay.com listings, everything is RARE, HARD TO FIND. I told one flea market vendor most of the mugs and cups he listed as food grade were stuff that was used for trophies and mantle pieces . Which meant they contained lead.
He thought all his stuff had a large % of silver in it cause he polished it up real shiny.
