Not sure you can see the mark, but it says international pewter with an eagle in the middle... Shooter will be so proud...lol
Looks like a nice heavy one. Over a pound?

Hallmarks are tough to photograph without a macro setting on your camera.

I have not. Beaded circle marks are traditionally 17th century British, but the measure is for liters, so it would have to be much later.

Probably already on here but Holland Boone polished pewter made in Mexico is not pewter but aluminum.
If you say you can't, you probably won't.

Some days you find a pile, some days you get skunked and some days you get a taste. Today we get a taste...

Another salt and pepper set. 2 inches tall, but solid pewter, no glass like in post #250. Only 3.8 ounces for the pair.

    And a 4 3/4 inch plate and cup/bowl set at 9.3 ounces:

I'm making a 100# batch of alloy using 50% COWW and 50% pure lead. If I use food grade pewter how much should I mix in to get the 2% for mold fill out?

In one of the stickies of this section has a downloaded calculator that you can use. I'm in my phone so I can't copy the link here.

    Good luck.

49 pounds lead, 49 pounds COWW and 2 pounds of pewter will be close enough.

Thanks Dale, I didn't know if you could use Pewter like pure Tin cause of the other quantity's in the pewter.

If the pewter was 92 Sn, 5 Sb and 3 Cu (one of the most popular US alloys, European and Asian alloys are typically higher tin and lower copper), then adding 2% pewter will add only .1% Sb and .06% Cu. The composition of your COWW and "pure" can vary more than that. We tend to ignore the fact that for the most part, we are not dealing with certified alloys in our hobby.

I am sorry, but nobody is THAT desperate for a little tin! The antique value is far more valuable that wanting some lousy tin for your boolits.

Tin is not THAT hard to find in bar form. Rotomteals.com.

No, but we are melting the heck out of 20th century pewter which has a value right about the same as scrap tin. You should have read the thread before posting.

I don't know about the 17th or 18th century but I'm looking at beat up and bent stuff from the 30's and 40's. I imagine if I ran across stuff of that vintage and I were able to buy it, it would be in such a state the antique value would be null and void.

I'm waiting for the chance to melt some colonial wheelweights. For now I'll just have to be satisfied with burning Duncan Phyfe furniture in the woodstove to melt my colonial pewter.

    Excuse me......I HAVE read it.

I saw where in an above post(s) there was some very old pewter listed and was afraid some out there might be melting it down.

I know you do not....(from reading the thread! for many weeks/months). If you have a source of newer stuff, more power to you.

I use pure 100% tin ingots I have had for years......... when tin was very cheap (<$ 0.70/#)

take care. And keep providing that alloy to those that cannot find it today at reasonable prices.

My reply was unnecessarily harsh. I apologize.

As for the measure pictured above, beaded circle marks are a traditional 17th century English design. However, there isn't any law stating a company can't design a beaded circle mark today. Metrication did not begin until the late 18th century and did not come to England until the 1960's. Since the measure is marked "double litre," it clearly cannot be 17th century. I wouldn't buy it because I can't positively identify it as lead free, but I don't think it is all that old.

Thanks for the info. I have been keeping a lookout for items marked Pewter, but so far, have not found any at a reasonable price.

Scrounging is always feast or famine Chuck! I haven't even seen an overpriced piece since the 4th. Keep looking and you'll find some.

When I first read this thread, I went on a search for pewter. I did find some, but the owners thought it was something akin to gold. No luck at the salvage yard either. Oh, well. One of the pitfalls of living in a small, formerly rural town......
