With the revised pictures and the eBay link I will say this. It is cast and cast is a bad sign. The back does have International Pewter cast into it and that is promising. But without the ability to touch it and feel what it is made of, I would pass.

This is the same plate on auction; http://www.ebay.com/itm/EUC-We-Are-O...item2331f9efad
If you buy both plates for $20 each plus $10 shipping, that's $50 for 4.4lbs. You can buy 5lbs of pewter ingots on this site for $45.

The International Pewter I find has an eagle with outstreahed wings between International and Pewter. They are usually reproductions of colonial pieces with a numerical production code.

I have also found German Zinn/Pewter commemoritive cups with very fine lines in relief that stand up to being knocked around without showing signs of distress and they still melt at 450-460 degF like the rest of my finds.

One of those thing that was to good to be true. I made an offer to an ebay seller that had pewter auctions but he wanted to ride his auctions out in hopes of more money. He said he had some stuff that didn't sell and these plates were a couple of them. I offered $4.00 a lb which he agreed was fine and he would split the shipping with me. But, if I can't use it I'll pass.
Thanks for the heads-up, saved me about $20.00.

Not sure what you mean by "the scratch test." Pewter is soft and if you take a sharp steel object to it it will mark deeply with little pressure. The aluminum / zinc alloys are much harder and will only mark lightly if at all. That said, I've never been to a yard sale or thrift store where the proprietor was hot on the customers trying to gouge his product with a pocket knife.

Seriously, there are lots of pictures here. Look at the forms. The aluminum / zinc alloy pieces just don't look like pewter pieces. They are much thicker, they have mold parting lines, the legs and handles are cast in. They don't FEEL like pewter when you pick them up.

It won't take long before you're an old salt at this.

    Pewter?

This is my first find if it's the real thing.
    Came in at 9oz.

I regret to say it looks like hammered aluminum to me. Tough to give a definitive call without being able to actually see / touch it though.

Again, that piece looks more like aluminum to me. I think I've only seen ONE piece of pewter that wasn't marked "pewter". Often, foreign pewter is marked "tinn" as someone said. If it ain't marked, don't buy it.

No fancy hallmark, but the result will be the same once it's melted.

Some new hallmarks... First up is a very beat up creamer and sugar, 5.4 ounces each.

A 5 inch solid bottom tankard, disappointing at 10 ounces but a very cool hallmark.

Your standard 9 inch bowl at 1 pound 3.4 ounces.

And last, an 11X9 inch covered dish at 1 pound 10 ounces for the set.

Imashooter2- where was the hallmark on the 9" bowl? Middle of the bottom or someplace else?

    Thanks.

The "foot" of the bowl is a soldered on ring, and the hallmark was stamped almost perfectly centered on the bottom.

Thanks. I've seen a bunch that look like that but haven't been able to locate any hallmarks or any markings.

    Thanks.

I've never seen any that were real pewter that weren't marked, even if the mark was only "genuine pewter" in block text.

Agreed. That's why I was wondering if it was somehow hidden somewhere. I found some stuff at 1/2 price Goodwill so I don't feel too bad.
