I found a commemorative plate at the St Vincent store with a picture of Vienna Austria on it. It was apparently given to a priest, whose name was engraved. In order to get it into my Lee melter, I just cut it up with tin snips. It was easy.

I've fit a bunch of 12 - 14 inch trays into my Lyman pot with the fold and hammer method. Bowls get the bases torn off, the sides rolled in and then hammer work to suit. I've done a fair bit of this. Cutting is always a pain. The hammer and vise are the way to go.

Now why didn't I think of that? Just cut up some pewter and melted last week...tin snips are a pain. After a week at the office, the hammer and vise sounds like more fun anyway

I cut up a fair amount of stuff before I figured out the most efficient method. You would have figured it out too. But why not share our experiences?

Hi, first post on the forum, so take anything I say with a big mouthful of flux. I've only melted down about 7 lbs of pewter as well....

I've learned a lot from this place and have been picking up pewter pieces and melting them into ingots, getting ready to cast boolits someday soon. This thread has saved me a bunch of time and money. Thanks for all that contributed to it, from a new melter (not a caster yet).

Anyway, I use a propane torch and some pliers/channel locks/vise grips to melt larger items to fit in my little pot. I use it sort of like a slow cutting torch, but take it easy not to get it too hot. Drip and move, drip and move. Then plop! an start on another section. On the mugs with the glass bottom, I can cut close to the bottom and leave the rim, glass and goop to fight with later. Not sure if this is a good idea or not, but seems to work fine for me.

Picked up a picture frame with this written inside: "1999 Canada pewter stain zinn" I'm ASSuming it's pewter but am not 100% after some of the comments about picture frames.

Zinn means tin. It's probably legit.

A few foreign terms for pewter are:
    Zinn (German / Austrian)
    Etain (French)
    Peltro (Italian)
    Tenn (Sweden)

    Made by Seagull right?

A couple pages back I showed what the response was from Seagull about their pewter picture frames

    konsole...

This frame is from Seagull. I saw your post about them. This frame is different in that it had a screwed on keeper for the glass/photo/backing. Also the printing inside the frame was very weak looking. However I have seen other frames in the shops but none thus far have had any hallmarks but this one.

I'll keep my eyes open. Pics of my last haul soon. Been busy with life/work.

"DATE CANADA PEWTER ETAIN ZINN" or something very close to that is what Seagull frames say. I can't say all because I'm not an expert on them, but that phrase is pretty much what they say. Recently I melted a small childs bowl that had an elephant handle on it and it said "1991 SEAGULL PEWTER CANADA"

Got a couple of nice pieces the past 2 weeks. Here is an interesting one. The round center picture is made of wood. It easily popped right off. My mother and mother-in-law was with me at the time, so I got the 10% off senor citizen discount . Paid around $2.67 for 22oz plate.

Here is what I take with me on my pewter hunt. It is a magnifying glass with a magnet glued on. The magnifying glass came with a small screwdriver for adjusting eye glasses. I got it free at a health fair.

Finally got pictures from the last score. 3 new hallmarks.

A 10.5 inch covered pitcher at 1 pound 13.5 ounces.

A 6 inch covered sugar at 12 ounces.

And a 3 inch sugar at 7.1 ounces.

Time to call in the professionals, I picked this plate up yesterday for next to nothing. It bends easier than anything I have ever seen but it doesn't make a sound when doing so. Has anyone ever seen anything like it? I don't see any markings on the bottom anywhere, but it sure felt right.
