    Excellent work.

When the barrel is screwed into its proper position, I'm wondering if doing this conversion has changed the accuracy of this rifle in any way?

Other than making it a more convenient rifle to stow away, I don't know why it would have any effects but, I just thought I'd ask.

Very well done. My hat's off to you.

Have you thought about how your going take up thread wear over time? I think the original winchester take downs had some screws that you could use in the receiver. They also did the half thread so you didn't have to do all the revolutions.

If you can do the conversion I guess you could replace the plate on the barrel with a thicker one in the future. Or shim it at the shoulder on the barrel.

I'm very impressed with you talent, writing skills, and that very neat rifle. I read that article years ago and still have it in my "projects" file. Alas, I don't have your machining skills. Still, inspired to "get 'er done".

At some point wear will be an issue. But I expect to be "Taking It Down" maybe once or twice a year (After I get done doing it a hundred times for all my friends.... )

If thread wear becomes an issue, I'll have to make another plate. The two screws that hold the plate to the forend can be used to take up any slack with small washers under the heads as a second option.

I'm going to teach myself how to "broach" and then I can do interrupted threads.

I have a 98 Mauser in 280 Ackley that I sporterized some time ago that is the next TD. It will have interrupted threads

BTW, if there is any interest in other rifles I've built over the years, there are articles and tons of pictures in the photo album on my web page........

What about a flip lever, under side of the tube mag....flip it one way, and it would push the mag plug back in the tube...flip the other and it locks the barrel/ mag tube from turning and backing out....just an idea, but I think it would work.
    Cheers

By the way, very nice work!

    .

Roy, I fear you're gonna need a longer belt, because it already has so many notches in it !

Yet another excellent result from a project by you - CONGRATS ! !

Wow! I am impressed with your innovative skills!!! (Gotta admit too that I'm a bit jealous of you folks with the skills and tools to do this type of work.)
Looking forward to reading about your future projects!

[QUOTE=rbertalotto;1364546]The barrel was then indicated in and the face of the attachment plate was turned true and perfect headspace was achived:

A new "plug" was turned for the end of the magazine. This plug will have a spring loaded button to keep the magazine in place which stops the barrel from unthreading:

Finished assembly with the magazine tube retracted:

    And extended:

And the retaining button on the other end:

And the button depressed and the tube retracted:

Nine turns and we are on:

    And the finished project:

This project was a lot of fun and very quick. 6 Hours from beginning to end!

The only thing I have left to do is figure out a way to retain the follower in the magazine tube as it needs to be retracted in some fashion so the barrel can be unscrewed. I'm open to suggestions.

Theres a step/shoulder in the action body and a corresponding step in the follower, that prevents the magazine follower from entering the action, you will need to bore most of that step out of the action, then make an extension for your magazine tube that takes its place - so now the follower and spring is held captive in the tube (need to make a new follower to get the dimensions right for feed) then your push button and retraction at the muzzle end should all work as is ----you already did the hard part! looks great too!!
