    alternative low cost swaging lube

just wanted to pop in for a bit and let you guys know about what i discovered and have been using for swaging lube. i lost my job at the lottery retailer and started working for a John Deere dealership as parts salesman. they have what is called "corn head grease" for the gearboxes on combine corn heads. its a thixotropic grease that works PERFECTLY for swaging bullets. and at 2$ for a 14 oz tube its far cheaper than any purpose made swaging lube. im using it with BT snipers dies for turning 9mm brass into 40 cal jacketed bullets. A1 results all around.

STP works great also and will work for case sizing lube. Have you tried sizing cases with "corn head grease" ?

I've just been spraying them with Winchester case lube that I bought when Midway had it on clearance for $2.99 a bottle a couple of years ago. I bought a case of it and use it for everything.

    Hope this helps.

    SW,

Good to hear from you. You shooting jackets out of your 4095 now?

I still like a soak in minerial sprits to remove lube.

Won't the left over lube help when firing thru barrel?
Listen! Do you hear it. The roar of cannons, the screams of the dying! Ahh! Music to my ears!

It is a good question, I never tried, I use a custom mix I make myself, but I always use alcohol to remove the lube after I make the final jacketed bullets.

Never tested it, any of you out there try it?

Swage lube would likely make a good lube for a muzzleloader but you use a lot of lube with a patch and ball or a cast bullet.

I tried some VO5 hair conditioner same stuff I use to size my cases worked fine for me. I also wash the lube off to keep it out or away from the powder.
Reloading to save money I am sure the saving is going to start soon

Like I have posted before, I use PAM, the same stuff my wife uses to spray down frying pans. I am now saving more money because I am using a "Generic" Pam that is available at supermarkets.

PAM and the "Generic" PAM is CHEAP and works better than any core lube I have tried before.

I also "mass lube" by spraying several hundred cores at a time and then rolling them around in the pan to evenly distribute the PAM. This is much, much faster than lubeing each core individually!

Corbin advises anhydrous lanolin in their dies applied with fingers, works great and is available at your local drugstore.

    +1; I'm told that's all that Corbin's swage lube is - a 50/50 mix.

    Gang,

I cannot take credit for this as I read it on one of the forums:

50 percent Anhydrous Lanolin and 50 percent Vasoline by weight. I measure it out and gently melt it in a microwave then put it in 50 cc syringes. I have been using this formula for several years and it works great. A little bit goes a long way.

I will say that when I bought a large container of Vasoline at a drug store, the young girl at the register looked at me kind of funny

    You are correct.

I guess I am a bit different in that I like the lube a bit thinner, actually a lot thinner, I use 10-20% Anhydrous Lanolin and 90-80% Castor oil.

It does not take much lanolin to thicken the stuff up.

I use it for swaging, sizing, and general lube at the work table, nothing has rusted so far so I guess that it also does well for that also.
    Just fold copper on lead...
