One glove on left hand to cut and open sprue. I don't beat on my molds. I open the sprue with the mold upside down in my left glove and dump the sprue in the glove and then return the sprue to the pot. I'm not tough enough to dump very hot lead in my uncovered hand.

I use leather welder's gloves on both hands .I do use my left hand to rotate the sprue plate .It is a little cumbersome working the mold but I have been using a set of modified vise grips for a locking mold set up so they do tend to heat up as opposed to holding wooden handles.
