I have a Mark IV Ballisti-cast bullet casting machine. I use a glove on my left hand and the only reason I use it is to remove spru material or touch a hot mold or to move bullets that land on the flat cookie sheet that catches the bullets. I never use gloves to otherwise touch or size bullets.

Me too. I am hard headed as a mule, but after severe pain that lingered far longer than I wanted, I came to the conclusion, "Hey bone head, wear gloves!"

Leather gloves, both hands, all the time, when working around the hot stuff. Soft & flexible, small gauntlet work/chore type. They are worn when handling hot items like the molds, poured lead ingots, fresh cast boolits, etc.. I also wear them when adding to the melt pot with fresh, cooled a bit but still hot sprues or even ambient temp metals, as well as when fluxing, simply because I have my hands right next 700+ deg. molten metal and I don't want a possible splash from adding, nor a flash pop from the fluxing. I also wear them when annealing.

I don't have soft hands or anything I have been "burned & learned", so I don't want to have any more burns if I can help it.

Sometimes the right hand is bare, but the left holding the handles is always gloved. I try to wear heavy leather work gloves. Tom

I also have one hand gloved to work the sprue. Had a hard time with rhythm till I started doing that. Now its like a meditative start while I cast

yes always I do NOT beat my precision equipment with wood or anything else. I gently close my blocks and guide the pins into battery. Same with cutter plates.

As with EVERYTHING in life; I am more than willing to accept the risk that comes with my liberty.

Casting without gloves is a bad idea. I cannot manipulate molds with gloves so I do not wear them. There are only two kinds of bullet casters: Those who have been burnt and those who are GOING to get burnt. Careful as can be, it will happen. The severity will depend on your focus.
When I get burnt, the only one to blame is me.

Glove on right hand for the sprue , most of the time. Pretty much the only time I wear glove/ gloves is casting and welding. Safety glasses ALL the time ! Jeans and leather boots as well, t shirt or flannel depending on weather. Total focus on the task at hand is the primary line of defense.

Kevlar gloves. Heal of the hand to open sprue plate. Dump hot 45 cal boolits in hand to examine if you want. I find them soft, pliable and much better than leather at not transmitting too much heat to my hands as fast as leather gloves do.

Eye glasses are a must for me. Since I have had my share of burns, I wear gloves too. Shop around and find the best gloves for you. Everyone is diff as far as what is comfortable. Even with gloves, I dont make a habit of picking up something hot like bullets or mold. I must say, it is difficult to work the mold handles wearing a glove on my left hand. Thats why, choosing the best glove for you is the trick. For the most part, gloves are cheap compared to our casting equipment but worth trying several types until you find the right ones for you. I use a RCBS Pro Melt (best money I ever spent), even with this great tool, you can still get burned. /Chris
