    Interest in a MIHEC 180gr 38/357

This is a spinoff of the heavyweight thread. http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?t=113799

    Current requirements seem to be:
    Round nose flat point
    Single crimp groove

    We still need to decide:
Meplat (and possibly hollow point pin diameter length)
    Nose length
Number, type, width and depth of lube grooves
Gas check or no gas check.

    Thumbs up Hvy wt,

I can ride that train. 180 gr. flat base with a set of hollow point pins.

Hopefully we'll get 2 sets of hollow point pins, penta and round. I agree on flat base over bevel base, but had given thought to gas checked. It should be easy to get enough velocity without using gas checks on a 180 gr bullet to make them expand.

    MiHa 360640 rerun?

    Folks-

The MiHa 360640 is all you'll ever need. Whomever designed this bullet knew what they were doing. The full profile bullet casts at 176 grains with air cooled wheel weights; the HP version casts at ~162 grains with the same alloy. This particular bullet has 2 crimp grooves [sorry if you can't see them in the photos]. The will make things easier to crimp whether loading in .357 Magnum or the .38 Special. [Loaded round in the photo]

I had a good friend try the HP version that were cast with WW and dropped into slushy ice water. The HP's fragmented when going through wet phone books. We determined that it would make a really explosive defense load.

    Just food for thought.........

If that works fine for you, great. My 360640 with my alloy comes out to 158 grains with the round pin, 161 with the penta pin and 165 grains with the pins flipped to give flat nose bullets. I load the bullet into the 2nd crimp groove in both 38 Special and 357 Magnum, in my opinion the first (closest to the nose) crimp groove is useless. This does not mean I don't like the design, in fact I love it and would never sell my mould, I would just like a heavier one too.
I personally do not want a bullet that fragments, I would like them to expand, stay together and penetrates. The light bullets when driven fast (from longer barrels) fragment and do not hold together, that is why I would like a 180 gr or heavier hollow point.
I have been working on a design. I have one on graph paper and after I double check everything I'll try to draw it up on the computer and post it.

The bullets won't fragment if you cast them from a softer alloy, no matter how heavy, they will still fragment if too hard. I like something with a balance between weight, and speed, I don't have a longer cylinder 357 (Ruger Flattop). I have done most of my hollow point shooting with the 44 and 454, but I am looking forward to working with the 357, and have another on order for the 45 Colt.

Sorry I havn't posted any progress, I can't seem to get time to try to draw the bullet up on the computer. Which not that it matters, I don't see getting the minimum 20 orders for Miha.

    Groo here
Overkill the short crimp groove is to make Factory spec 357 rounds that are
lever and short cylinder friendly.. the long groove is to make spec 38 spec or long cylinder
    loads...
Remember not all of us load for rugers...
I had the same problem finding bullets I liked for the 41 mag.. lots of long nose for Rugers
few for shorter cylinder and lever guns...

I don't load for a Ruger, not in 357 Magnum anyway. What revolvers does everyone have with these super short cylinders, so I know to stay away from them? Maybe my mould was defective or my alloy and my bullets shrunk lengthwise.

Here's a link to a similar 180gr buy somone else is doing http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?t=117642
, it has a gas check though.

45 2.1, do you have any heavy 38 designs that may come out at 180gr after hollow pointing? (190-200)

Yes, but they don't do anything that the mentioned boolit won't. See the BRP website for those.

No....... I much prefer the 359640 design myself. Exceptional long range accuracy. The Mihec version with the two crimp grooves does very well also.

Take a look at the BRP 360-180 and 360-180GC with the 45 2.1 "640" nose ! Both of these are outstanding designs !
They are available right out of Bruce's catalog !

Those look good, but I'd like a wider meplat and a hollow point option.

That one is about what I'm looking for and what I was trying to design for this group buy, although it has a gas check shank.

I'd go for a 359640 style in a 4 cavity Mihec brass mold, either solid, cramer, or both.
