    AR 7.62X40 New Caliber

Has anyone here have a take on Wilson's new AR 7.62X40 caliber. It's a 30 caliber? It's based on a 5.56 brass. Dies from Hornady for this caliber is a little expensive at $79 from Wilson. Brass prep is a trimmed 5.56 then sized in a 7.62X40 die. In 1:8 twist barrels can use 110gr to 150gr boolits.

I have no take on it.

But thanks for showing me it exists.

Moonie, It appears to be designed for supersonic loads with 110-150 gr bullets.

The whisper uses heavier bullets and from what I understand, doesn't do so well in the supersonic range.

I know nothing of the blackout.

Maybe I'm missing the point, but it "sounds" like a reduced capacity version of a 7.62x39. 5.56 brass necked out to 7.62 sounds like it's darn near a straight walled case--couldn't be much shoulder left at that point. *shrug*

Seems like a great idea to me. Slightly better than 7.62x39 performance with none of the problems adapting that round to ARs (which doesn't work very well). Uses .223 brass that most of us probably own or can easily scrounge. The only problem is you have to load ammo for it but everyone on this board is a reloader. Well, one other problem, you do have to trim cases.

If it was easy, anybody could do it.

I'm kinda seeing something that looks like a stretched out 357 Sig case. The up side would be a lot of easy brass to punch out for it. The down side is I can see the same problem/difficulty in loading for it as the 357 Sig--- PITA unless the shorter case keeps a little neck after sizing. Hey, I'm open to new. *shrug* Never know--anything could turn out to be the perfect combination.

Reincarnation of the .30 TCU?? As I recall, back in the late '70s, Wes Uvalde may have chambered a few Contender barrels for a .30 cal based on the .223 but since TC was already offering the .30 Herrett, the .30 Carbine, and the .30-30, they didn't pick it up as a production caliber like the 7 TCU.

I can see no reason why a cartridge should not headspace on the case mouth. It won't if not designed to and a bit unforgiving if the case is trimmed too much!

Stretched copy/version of the 300 BLK.

There seems to be a lot of mis-information and wishful thinking going around about the BLK.

Remington is loading it supersonic with jacketed bullets. Over 2200fps.

WE are the ones talking subsonic, for the most part.

There is some LEO/Mil interest in the heavier suppressed J loads for a house cleaner. Sierra had data for up to their 240gr MK's both super and sub data.

I am planning a subsonic with a suppressor for an AR pistol. Then, again, how much fun would my Savage 12BVSS 223 be with one of these barrels on it?

Well I'll be. Was pondering this yesterday while driving down the road and reccominded myself to measure the 5.56 case and see what it would accept necking it out. I was guessing 8mm would work well.

OAL remains the same, and that is dictated by the mag length.

A longer case just forces you to seat the bullet deeper. Look back to the diagrams of the 300BLK, and Imagine it FL 30-223. Where does the deeply seated bullet/boolet base extend to?
    The primer flash hole?

This longer one sounds like a LtWt J-bullet project.

For single shots, make the brass from 5.56 x 50R (rimmed) and there will be no headspace issue.

Either way, it sounds like a solution in search of a problem to me.
