You mean you all don't have one? All the top shooters at Camp Perry keep one in their kit. Rainclouds roll in pretty fast across Lake Erie. Naw, course there ain't no such thing Rich, too many variables, size of the rain drop, how many you gonna hit at a given range, which would be wholly unpredictable, whether the rain is vertical or coming at an angle, and if it's cool enough, slush factor, etc. I bring it up when it's raining at the range, see how many takers I get. I don't doubt ordnance tried somewhere along the way though.

I read where one person found more consistent load that what seem to be average utilizing the top two slides on the Lyman 55. This made me feel that my theory that shallow and wide would allow these unique shaped/sizes grains of powder to fall into place more consistently and make it possible to "throw" charges vs weighing each one. To test the theory I set two RCBS measures for a nominal 10.0 grains of powder. Using the RCBS measure with small and large bore chamber drums with this funny grained powder sorta proves that the measure can make a difference but not enough to just throw charges.

The 20 weighed charges the difference with the small drum was a low of 10.2 and a high of 12.9. Weights were all over the place.
Using the large drum I had a low of 9.2 and a max of 10.2 and most were in the 9.8, 9.9 range. Where the 1 powder weight difference would show up with the boolis impact has yet to be determined/measured. If one were close to the upper level of pressure, 1 grain could get "interesting" indeed.

I have posted the raw numbers and some statistician out there can tell us if there is significance in the differences in my findings.

Raw gut feeling says large diameter shallow cavity is most consistent due to the large sheet shape of this powder and the way it aligns when the drum turns and this is probably why, as someone posted above they got fairly consistent readings with a Lyman 55 using only the top two slides. When looks at the shape of the powder grains it makes perfect sense though intuition is many times . . . wrong.

Let me edit all of this once again and maybe save it this time

Lets see how site software destroys a table, it did, the table was hand corrected with spacing here on the site and then again edited and it still jams the numbers together.

I can not explain the unusual variation in the one dump with the large drum.

Might work where one is plinking, but not for a load that will need to be consistent unless each charge is weighed or through experience the weird anomaly does not occur, or is insignificant to hunting "accuracy". May well be difference in powder weight is not significant to the precision of the boolit impacts.

I did a little bit of testing I had been meaning to do for a while.

    357 herett

Worked up to 15.0gr with 180gr 200gr and 210gr bullets. No signs of excessive pressure by expansion ring measurements. Accuracy is pretty good.

    375 H&H
25.0gr with 290gr and 400gr bullets. No signs of excess pressure via expansion ring measurements. Accuracy and recoil on par with 23.0gr Blue Dot loads I have used previously.
Some where between here and there.....

    Hmmmm
I have a 10" Herrett barrel and a lot of this powder and if the 180 grain RNFP GC LAR45 boolit from a long ago Group Buy will fly true, I may use it next fall.

358156 Lyman mold that I bought here flies very true out of that barrel in some testing I have done with other powder, I may just have to try 10B101 behind that boolit.

Good gravy, another whole new tangent to go off on . . . The Herrett's, 10 and 14 inch, AND 30 and 357.

I can see a good half a day behind a chronograph with this powder alone.

    Madsenshooter,

I noted your post on 10B101 using jacketed loads, as per your suggestion I have loaded 150grn FMJ's for reduced loads in 7.62x54, using essentially the same load you did, which seems to be right in line with reduce Blue Dot loads. My results were similar using a 91/30 and 38 Mosin Nagants, MUCH more pleasant to shoot over full house loads, especially in the 38

I had some issues using the 10B101 with cast, it seems that I need to try the RanchDog method of lubing with LLA as I dont have a lube/sizer, some of the loads were causing leading in the last few inches of barrel

I appreciate the help on the reduced jacketed loads and plan on burning up a lot of .308 and 8mm tracers this summer, full house 8mm loads arent as much fun after 20 or 30 rounds

I don't have any velocity data yet but using Lyman data for blue dot i loaded some 40 s&w 175 gr lee about 7.5 gr using modified dipper. This was crazy accurate and functioned good in my xd 4".

I found some interesting information on 10b101 power in the Army Ammunition Data Sheets
Technical Manual 43-0001-27. This powder is used in the 50 cal. ball (m858) and tracer (M860)
plastic practice round. The cartridge is identified by the blue bullet and case which are molded into one piece with high density polyethylene plastic. Propellant charge is 49 gr. of 10b101, velocity is 2790 fps and max range is 700 m with a chamber pressure of 26,100 psi.

Testing some aught 6 loads with 150 GB Boolit and the 165 Ranch Dog Boolit.

I use milk jugs filled with water at 50 yards as a yardstick on impact effect on the target.

16 grains of 10B101 Lot # 91A-009 BEHIND the 165 grain Ranch Dog blew it up as well or better than 257 Roberts coated bullet loads.

Better than 200 Grain RNFP RCBS Boolit from the 338 Mag.

Have no idea of velocity, but sure does have terminal effect. I am guessing 1500 - 1600fps . . .

Any opinions on the velocity guess?

    10B101, Ranch Dog 165 and 7.7X58 Type 99

Same load data in the 7.7 really started performing with the same loads that shot well out of the 06.

Winchester reformed 06 brass to 7.7X58
    CCI LR
Ranch Dog 165 sized to 0.310"
    50:50 lube
    2.975" OAL
    16.0 grains 10B101 Lot # 91A-009

1 inch outside to outside at 50 yards

Stopped at 16.0 grains due to darkness

Wonder how far I can go with the powder? Going back and rereading postings here, for the 30-40 Krag (same case capacity) I have a lot more I can go, but don't feel comfortable jumping from current load to the posted loads (4-6 grains) without chronograph data.
Sure wish the chronograph was easier to set up!

This powder seems to be in the mix for accurate loads for the boolits I have on hand.

Mosin Nagant converted to 500 S&W.
    Lee 440gr. paper patched.
2.2cc 10B101 shot into a ragged hole at 25 yards, under an inch at 50. Haven't tried it further. Fairly mild load, no pressure problems at all. In the neighborhood of 1500 fps from the 20 inch barrel. I did fire one indoors in my test trap and the muzzle flash was impressive! Didn't see any outside though.

    10B101 Muzzle Flash

Interesting, I was shooting in pretty dark overcast conditions yesterday and in the 14 inch Contender shooting 30-30 and 30 Herrett did not notice any flash.

Wonder if it is "combustible gasses" in the larger bore that burn in the 30 cal?

Powder is some effort to load, but I think I will come to enjoy what it will do with cast boolits.

Based on 2400 data I tried 24gr 10B101, lot #91-009, under some Hornady 150gr FMJBT in my Krag. The old Hercules handbook says 2190fps @34000psi. The condition of the primers says back off a bit, especially in the Krag. Accuracy wasn't too bad for bulk bullets that have a long jump into the throat. I'm sure it will improve with a bit less pressure.

I shot some more of the Lee 440gr. bullets in the 500 S&W. Naked this time, with 45-45-10 tumble lube. 1.9cc 10B101 at about 1250 fps, and very accurate. Duplicates the 50-70 and is easy to shoot.

    10B in Swiss Penetrator Ammo?

Found a couple pics of some 7.5 Swiss Penetrator ammo, the powder sure resembles 10B101! Of course it may be a completely different burn rate.

10B101 (Lot 91A-009) and the Rossi 92 in 357 Mag.

12.0, 12.3, 12.6 grains of 10B101 and the 358156 loaded to 1.630" in RP cases and fired off with WSP primers seem to be accurate (minute of deer heart anyway at 110 yards).

Will test 50 and 110 yard impact on 1 gallon jug of water this week.

I need to put these loads across a chronograph.
