After what S&W did to Maryland, no thanks... sending their lobbyists down here to lobby for more handgun laws, handgun locks, no apology from their previous owners (Thompson), no apology from their current owners (Thompson holding all the debt for Safe-T-Hammer)... no thanks. No more S&W for me, like, forever.

Well, maybe if they gave me a million dollar donation like they did to the NRA to get back in their good graces...
I give loading advice based on my actual results in factory rifles with standard chambers, twist rates and basic accurizing.
My goals for using cast boolits are lots of good, cheap, and reasonably accurate shooting, while avoiding overly tedious loading processes.
The BHN Deformation Formula, and why I don't use it.
How to find and fix sizing die eccentricity problems.
Do you trust your casting thermometer?
    A few musings.

Okay, we've got ten orders. Still working out the details on credit card payment. Those of you paying by check, send your FFL and $1350 to:

John Ross c/o Mullin Law Office
    7912 Bonhomme Suite 375
    St. Louis, MO 63105

I'll keep the buy open for a few more weeks if anyone else wants in.

From what I can tell from the MA approved list, all 500s made by S&W are approved. S&W called the 2 3/4" bear survival gun the 500ES, but all other variants in this caliber are just called the 500. Both 500 and 500ES are on the MA list.

I have shipped several guns to MA. I can't see where there's an expiration date for guns that have been approved.

Well my dealer said that they don't just go by the model number they also use the SKU#. If you don't mind checking it out to be sure, that would be appreciated. I just don't want to have a problem and a pain for both of us. Warren

Just talked to both S&W and the MA AG's office. MA approvals do not "expire." There is a process whereby a gun can be removed from the approved list, but it has to be for a specific reason, such as evidence that the gun now won't pass the test as it did before.

    My gun is MA compliant.

BTW I asked if there were any S&W revolvers made after the MA rules were put in place that were not approved and the Customer Service person said he didn't think so.

Thanks John, Sounds good to me. Last question: Did you find out about using credit cards for payment. If not I can send a check, but I would prefer american express.

John, you could also simply set up a PayPal or GunPal account to receive monies directly. PayPal is funny about gun stuff on eBay but AFAIK could care less about private sales.

I will not use PayPal or GunPal. Too many negatives.

I'm really on the fence fellas, need some help here! Originally wanted to spend 800 for the 4" until I read that the 700 grain bullets wobbles around 30 yards out of the gun. I've been going back and forth on this page nearly EVERYDAY!!!! thinking if I don't get it now I will miss out on this, but i'm gonna spend almost twice as much as my original budget! I think i'm being a tight wad. LOL

From the PM you sent me I infer that this is your first gun purchase, or at least your first centerfire handgun purchase. You mention that until recently you didn't have the means to afford this interest in guns. I think we've all been there...

I further assume that you don't (yet) reload and you certainly don't cast.

If you are actually going to shoot your .500 (whichever one you buy), it is going to cost you AT LEAST $1.50 per shot for ammo from Ballistic Supply. Double that if you buy your ammo in a store.

I don't like to tell people what they can or can't handle, and my first centerfire handgun was a .44 magnum I got on my 14th birthday. However, the idea of a newcomer wanting to START his shooting career with a 56 or 57 ounce .500 magnum firing 700 grain bullets makes me cringe just a little.

Here's a suggestion: Find a decent USED S&W or Ruger DA revolver in .357 for $350 or so. Shoot it some. See if you like it. If you don't, sell it and lose maybe $30.

If you like it and still think you want a similar gun but with five times the power, get back to me.

If you are determined to start with a .500, get the original Sample Pack of ammo from Ballistic Supply. It has ten rounds of five different loads, starting with a 300 gr. at 900FPS and ending with a 500 @ 1325. You can then find out where your comfort level is for recoil. If the 500@1325 doesn't bother you, then go for the 600 and 700 grain loads, by all means.

Again, if you are determined to buy a .500 RIGHT NOW, I'd recommend that used standard version you found for $800. Use the other $550 for ammo and/or reloading tools.

If you like the .500 but dislike the concussion from the brake, or want to shoot really heavy bullets, sell it and get one of mine. I'll hold one for you for twelve months at the $1350 PPD price.

Just wondering, but does this gun have the heavier cylinder stop spring in it?
