John recommends the Leupolds. There is a nice looking Weaver 2x28 in the Swap Forum right now... very tempting.

I was gonna ask about mounts, John. Most seem flimsy and ungainly on these pistols. There is one that will fit the 8 3/4 barrel but never the 5.

    What is everybody using?

"Flimsy" and "ungainly" seem almost mutually exclusive. My beef is most are too big and heavy. The one pictured above seems perfect for a Leupold 2X. Steel is not needed--AL will work fine for a Weaver type setup.

    Its an EGW S&W Mount

In order to fit LaRue mount the scope mount had to be machined by my gunsmith.

Any other rings will fit not problem.

Thanks Paulinski. I will definitely be ordering one of those and may mill down the front end to match the curve of the top strap.

Thanks for the input John. I was thinking the mounts would have to be super beefy to handle the shell shock.

Shearing screws is your risk. A heavier mount makes this MORE likely. The critical point is that there must be contact of the mount at the rear sight notch to prevent shear loads. Shim it with brass stock if it doesn't actually touch.

Now that all guns ordered by people here who paid by check have shipped and been received, this thread is strangely silent.

Is everyone lying in bed on morphine from damaged wrists and/or heads? Is everyone waiting on more lead for casting? Have your wives all filed for divorce? Are you waiting for me to die of lead poisoning so the prices will jump? Did you all blow up your guns with double charges of Titegroup and are too embarrassed to admit it?

Hahaha... I fired both my pistols double-handed, Josey Wales style and now I have casts on both wrists. Just kidding.

I'm gearing up for a major lead spill at my place over the winter John. I've got about 10 molds from Miha and others and a whole bunch of indoor range lead that needs smelting but this summer I have so many projects I won't get time to cast. I have fired a few factory loads and absolutely love the guns.

Let me take this opportunity to thank you both for the beautiful design of the JR 500 and for all the help you have provided in this thread answering questions on powder charges and so forth. I've copied and pasted all of your responses into a word document for later reference.

I hope that you will find the time to continue your biography as well, as you have had a most interesting life.

OK John, No time to rest on your laurels, get busy now with more of your biography with pictures, footnotes, bibliography, you know the drill... Keep your powder dry, Don

I suppose I should report. I shot up some of my old FMJ and ftx ammo(light weights, (300 and 350 grain stuff moving at 1900 some odd fps) and had problems with the cci primers not being struck hard enough to fire (about half the time). I am extremely pleased with the accuracy. Consistently hit the big 300 yard gong at my range. Courtesy of Don Purcell and a little trade we did (made him a custom holster for his JR500), I have some good heavier cast boolits to try out as soon as I score some different primers. I used a pair of shooting gloves and recoil really isn't as bad as I had anticipated. I have a broken Boxer bone in my pinky that recently healed and it didn't even bother that. I concur with John that it is nicer to fire the 500magnum without a compensator.

    Hi all,

Figures, I get my JR500 and work hammers me !!!
I did get to the indoor range to shoot some mouse fart loads thru it. (325g with 10-12 g Trail Boss). Funny, they have a problem with me shooting full tilt 500's indoors !?!?!?!

Hope to make it outside within a week or two for some real fun !! I'm interested in what it's like compared to my 4" with comp.

Now we just need to get that 600g thumper buy going !!

As others have said - THANKS JOHN for offering this to us !!!

^^^ You are lucky to shoot at all indoors. My local range owner turns green when I mention the 500's.

I have only put some 385 Remingtons JHPs through mine so far. I need to get more loaded up.

I am waiting for some of the lighter weight mold GBs to come through. I only have the 700 HP mold right now.

Is there anyone else who is looking for one of these guns that hasn't purchased one yet? My father's came in and after only a half dozen rounds fired through it, I'm looking to resell it. Our standard loads don't get along with the different twist rate. Our reloads are shooting around 1900 fps and are a bit too snappy in this gun. I could develop a different load for it, but I'd rather have the same load for all our SW500s. Let me know if anyone's looking for one.
