    #6 Odd Shell holder question

I found a #6 shellholder on my bench- it is stamped " 6 " but it matches nothing on the charts, the lip that holds the rim is 0.025" larger than a shell holder designed for .223 and the .223 is a very loose fit as the lips are 0.370" rather than 0.345" (quick rough measurement).

It does not match anything on this shellholder chart
    www.reloadbench.com/gloss/rshellx.html either.

Any idea of what it is for?

RCBS shell holder #6 is for the .38 Special/.357 Magnum series of cases. You didn't mention the brand, though.

    Hope this helps.

It is too small to fit the 38 special/357 mag.
There is no "brand" stamped on it
only the number " 6 " and I can not find a 6 shell holder on any factory brand chart that comes near to the rim size this fits. The .233 rem fits extremely loosely but I would not trust it to support the rim enough when pulling a case from a resizing die.

Is it a universal x type shellholder or some other variation of shellholder?

You might post a picture of it, Pressman did a very nice article in one of hte recent ARTCA newsletters on various types of shellholders. He might be able to help out on it's id.

It looks like any other "standard" shell holder.
The only issue is that it has 6 stamped on it and it will not fit any of the cartridges listed by the manufacturers as using a No. 6 shell holder. It is not Lyman Hornady RCBS Lee Redding or C-H from their charts.

    Try 32 H&R Mag. (Lyman shellholder #9)

I used to use a Lee screw-in shellholder for the 223 to prime 32H&R mag. Tight fit but it worked. Later I got the right Lee screw in shellholder for 32 H&R mag and 223 is a sloppy fit in it.

I think KTW has it pegged for you. Where is the number stamped?

Try a 9 m/m. .345 is about correct for the lip dimention. If it fits then its a Lee. They show their #6 fits the 9 m/m as well as the 38 Super and the .38 ACP.

It is a very sloppy fit on the 9mm but it would likely work.
It is not likely a lee as it is extremely worn and there are too many machine marks on it.
