You don't need a gas check or paper patch unless you just want one. A plain base 405 wide meplat, of the original Gould HP will do just fine over someplace between 22-26 gr. of 2400 for hogs. Good to 100 for sure. Even with a magna ported bbl you will notice some decent recoil from the little #3. Good luck!

I'd suggest a 300 gr RCBS GC bullet cast of 50/50 WW/lead at 1500 - 1600 fps. Even with the muzzle break if that #3 has the original butt stock it will let you know you've pulled a trigger.

The last time I went hog hunting I used a Lyman 457124 400 gr round nose. I got 4 for 4 shots so it worked fine on them.

about a couple of molds I have...But have never used.
    RCBS 45-300 FN (GC) 2 cav. 300gr
    Ideal 457193 1 cav 405gr
Maybe others want to chime in,
would either of these be good for Hogs ? or Bad for Hogs

The Lee 457-340-F will do it. Mine drop at .459" diameter and weigh 328 grains with WW:Lino at 7:3 with BHN-14 hardness. At 1500 fps they expand 100% and kill bear and deer very dead.

Since I am a glutton for punishment I actually own two #3's in .45-70. 36 years experience with the first one I bought will say to fill the buttstock (the hole underneath the buttplate) with #9 shot to reduce the "#3 kiss." Just about any boolit 300 to 420 grains traveling downrange at 1400 to 1600 fps made of 50/50 alloy of WW and Pb will be more than enough.

Years ago I sold a 1895 Marlin to a friend and gave him 100 rounds to go with it. I used boolits from the RCBS 300gr FPGC mold and loaded them to 1600 fps. The very first buck he shot, at a distance of 50 yards was thrown uphill and spun 180 degrees. Needless to say it didn't run.

really want a frisky load??? try 50gr of 3031 behind a water dropped lyman #457125 boolit sparked with a mag primer. if recoil is a bother to ya then never mind that load...its a thumper for sure.

a fun load with this or any other ruger #1 or 3 is to load 68gr of goex 2f black powder behind the lyman 457193 boolit and spark it with a large pistol primer. this does and will kill at a very good rate for what your looking for.

The Lyman Gould HP was a very good bullet for deer @ 325 grains and moderate velocities. You can use a very short base pin also. Gas checked or patched it worked very well. BvT
Every lawbreaker we allow into our nation, or tolerate in our citizen population leads to the further escalation of law breaking of all kinds and acceptance of evil.
Since almost all aspects of our cultural existence are LIBERAL in most states, this means that the nation is on a trajectory to dissolution by the burden of toleration and acceptance of LAWBREAKING as a norm, a trajectory back to the dark ages of history.
