    28/30/120

Hi, my name is Hank45 and I am new to the cast boolit forum. I am having a ruger#1 action rebarreled to 28/30 and I need some loading data from some one who shoots this cartridge, anything will help me along? Thanks, Hank

I suppose this is what your talking about. It's in Cartridges Of The World with a few loads. I hope you have a source for brass as it has no parent case. 224 Weatherby is what Cartridge Conversions suggest. ..Geo

Hank, the 28-30 Stevens round, as others in the old days were named accordingly:
    28 = Caliber
30 = Grains of original gunpowder. For this round, it was Fg granulation
Original Bullet Weight = 120 gr
The velocity will be 1500 fps

Brass ... http://www.grafs.com/retail/catalog/...productId/1115 loaded rounds only. Also contact Bertram to see what they have in stock for this round that is not a big seller

    Hank45,

You might query the ASSRA Forum membership about smokeless loads for the .28-30. Some of the members have and shoot them.

The proper boolit is the Ideal 287221, unfortunately obsolete. When found, it is often full-length at 175 gr for Spanish Mausers; the .28-30 used the shortened version at 120 grains. By the way, the first Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook has a load of 5 gr Unique with this boolit and weight.

    I don't have one but...

From: The Breech-Loading Single Shot Rifle, Roberts and Waters

    Pope 136-gr or Ideal 285221 135-gr
    13.0 to 15.0 - IMR4227 - Rem 9 1/2 primer - card, felt or 3/16" cork overpowder wad - breech-seated 1/16" ahead of case
    12.0 to 14.5 - SR4759 - rest as above

    Ideal 285221 120-gr
    11.5 - IMR4198 - blotting paper wad - breech-seated

    Ideal 285448 125-gr
    12.0 - IMR4198 - blotting paper wad - breech-seated

Roberts had a few fixed ammunition loads, but I think they were either black powder or semi-smokeless or duplexed. If you want them, I'll post them. This caliber was one of his favorites for woodchucks; it ended about 1000 of their furry little lives.

There's one load with 2400 in Sharpe, but I forgot to write it down. The rest of the loads are duplexes with obsolete powders.

I'll dig around and see what else I can find (and get the Sharpe load).

Trail Boss might be a good powder for a plinking load due to its bulk and that skinny case.

Note: the Ideal moulds listed in my first post are now 287221 and 287448.

From: Complete Guide to Handloading, Sharpe

    Ideal 285346 (now 287346) 138-gr - 12.0 - 2400

From: Handloader #108, Cartridges Down Under
    Nasty, tatty old j-word bullets
    Bertram case, small rifle primer

    100-gr Hornady #2800
    H4198 - 32.0 - 2915 fps
    H322 - 33.0 - 2808

    120-gr Hornady #2815
    H4198 - 29.0 - 2590
    H322 - 31.0 - 2570
    W748 - 36.0 -2433

    139-gr Hornady #2825
    H4198 - 26.0 - 2294
    H322 - 29.0 - 2347

    162-gr Hornady #2840
    H322 - 27.0 - 2168
    W748 - 32.0 - 2107

    140-gr GC Redding/SAECO #281
    H4227 - 13.0 - 1502
    W296 - 13.0 - 1544
or 8.0 grs. of either for "just under 1100 fps"

The above were fired in a Contender with a Bulberry barrel. I don't think I'd want to pop one of the jacketed loads in a Stevens 44 or 44 1/2.
