    My first smelt...

Well, my first smelt or melt session has just concluded with a 4-pot total yielding 100lbs of lead.

It was a learning experience that I had been dreading for what appears to be no reason. It did not produce the beautiful ingots that you guys get, but they are very presentable and perfectly usable. I did learn some things about my set up that I will change before next time that will make the process go better. All said, I just hate that I put it off so long.

Yes, and I now look forward to my next session. It was not a bad experience at all. However, I think I will want to have my smelting for the year done before the summer gets to Georgia.......no, I am sure of that point.

Me too, after the 1st time when all those dirty WW's became bright and shiny muffins I was hooked. Now if I just get to where I enjoy lubing/sizing, I'd be set.

my problem is wanting to smelt but the weather has been way too cold this winter.. I cast in the garage when it is 20 or warmer but do my smelting outside...

Your probably smelting too close to the garage. Might try smelting around Florida or southern Texas. Should be a little more comfortable.

I enjoy smelting too. I started a thread a while back about rusty wheel weights I had gotten from a local salvage yard for free. They were literally ALL orange colored due to the clips rusting in the bucket (it was stored outside and was nearly full of water). It was my favorite days smelting. At the end of the afternoon, I had over 120 ~ lbs of beautiful silver ingots! I'll be doing some smelting next weekend for sure. The last couple weeks have been pretty good to me, lead-wise...

I kind of enjoy doing it too. Love to see a pile of nice shiny ingots from all that dirty lead. IF only the weather would cooperate I have a bunch of WW and range scrap to smelt.

I have been itching to fire up the smelter.. As soon as we get into the 30's outside i'm gonna make up some ingots.. Always amazes me how fast they are used up when I start casting though..
