It has been a long time since I bought ammo, but I don't remember a Hazmat fee.

There is no problem so great, that it cannot be solved by the proper application of high explosives.

I have never paid hazmat on manufactured ammunition, just on powder and primers.

I know but I bought a new concealed carry pistol 9mm. I will most likely get some loading dies & reload in the future.
But for now I need to buy some.

I don't buy too much factory ammo anymore, because I reload, but in the past I have purchased a bunch of 9mm at local gun shows.

Froogal did you save a lot buying your ammo at gun shows? Another question? I have always used Lee dies there cheaper than the rest
& work great. For a 9mm do I really need the crimping die or can I get buy with the three die set?

You should be good with the 3 die set. I use a taper crimp die in my progressive press but it isn't necessary. If you are talking about the Lee factory crimp die it to isn't a must either.

    Get the carbide set .
    It saves lubing the cases.
And I do not use the factory crimp die.
I have 9mm dies from RCBS and Lee.
I use the Lee more because it is Carbide.
The RCBS is only a three die set and I used it for over 30 years

The price for ammo at a gun show is about the same as buying from someplace like Midway, so no real savings there, but I do like to support the vendors who come to those shows. Most of them also bring a good selection of firearms as well as powder, primers, etc. I want to see them come back again and again. As for the reloading dies, LEE is all I have ever used, and I do like the 4 die set, especially for 9mm, semi-auto rounds. I want to know that I have reloaded those cartridges as close to original factory specs as I possibly can do.

I have found that even with the carbide dies, lubing the cases will prevent a lot of frustration. It takes only stuck case to ruin the day.

Last night I was Bored after watching the football game.
So I saw a YouTube video on Crystalizing Stump remover for making your own Powder.
They boiled two cups of Stump remover in three cups of water , then let it cool.
It formed real fine Crystal sticks that broke like fine glass.
Is there any advantage to Crystalizing the Potassium Nitrate for making powder ?
I really don't see that there would be any advantage unless you were using home grown Material from your manure pile.
Does anyone have any thoughts or input ?

I used stump remover in my first batches of powder and didn't have any problems with it as is. It was supposed to be nearly pure. If you had a bunch of additives or impurities, that might be an advantage but otherwise a waste of time. Besides KNO2 is easy enough to get and cheaper than stump remover.

I would think that the KNO2 would have started as a Crystal , then is pulverized or ground for sale.
So by what I saw. They were just repeating the process for nothing.
I too buy my KNO2 in Bulk , But have a few friends that still use Stump Remover to make things like rocket fuel with sugar with their kids.
But for the most part , I was just wondering if the KNO2 in that crystalized form had any special uses that I was not aware of.

I don't see any advantage in what they did. It all get ball milled into very fine powder & goes BOOM!

I already Ball Mill all my ingredients.
    They work fine.
And I don't see any need to Grow my own KNO2 on a heap of furtilizer.
But we have Caves in this state that have Bat Guano in them.
I could go really old school if push came to shove.

    @Indian Joe.
Well there is a fix if you ever get a bag of KNO2 that has Lots of those funny grains or say your bag gets contaminated with water.
Just boil the bad stuff and cool it back into crystals.
The info is not something I think you would use.
But it is always nice to store away knowledge to fix issues if they ever come up.
