Added Cheekpiece And Shellholder to New Rem. Spartan

My new single shot Remington Spartan in 7.62X39 came with a non- Monti Carlo butt-stock and eye level to the scope was poor and way too low:



Once and a while I do a little leather work and remedied the stock with a lace on roll over cheek-piece that aligns my eye to the scope naturally upon shouldering the rifle:



While I was at the leather work I added a shell holder too:




The light colored leather is from a Harbor Freight welders apron on sale this week for $6.99. The Shell holder is cut from an old Uncle Mikes wrist shell holder that I never liked on my wrist and it wouldn't fit over a jacket sleeve. The cheek piece padding is cut from a gardening kneeling pad and the dark leather cover for the cheek piece is cut from an old leather manuscript carrying bag. Lacing is bees waxed cotton twine. The stitching was done with a wooden handled sewing awl and I used waxed nylon shoe repair thread.

I like the quick loading that a shell carrier on the stock allows for a single shot and the rifle shoulders perfectly with closed eyes and upon opening my eyes the view through the scope is centered. The rifle fits now.

Looks good. What did you pad the cheek piece with? I have a K31 that I have to do something with. This looks like a good time to try your method out.

The cheek piece is cut from a gardening kneeling pad. those are foam and from the dollar store. It is covered with soft leather, pulled and stitched down over the cut foam. The leather for the cheek piece is top grain and the other lighter colored leather is split cowhide from a welding apron. The whole project took about 5 hours from drawing paper patterns to fit the rifle to finish.

It sure was a bargain. It is prettied up now and bore honed too. My reloading supplies just came and I loaded 10 rounds today. Long range weather forecast has single digit cold for the next 8 days here in Western New York, so I haven't shot it yet.

This is a new caliber for me. The load I will be trying first is Lee 150 gr. flat nose polished out to .313" and checked/sized to .312" as my bore slugged .311". Powder charge is 26.5 gr H4895 and 100% load density with 2.125" LOA. expecting 2200+ fps. The MAX for that bullet weight with a jacketed bullet is 28 gr, so the lower pressure, cast bullet will be even faster. On paper this looks looks a great load and I can't wait to shoot.

Off the rack, the rifle had poor wood finish and a heavy trigger pull, but I'm pretty good with that stuff.. I will likely hunt deer/coyote with this rifle. I think it is great the 7.62X39 loads to just over 30-30 level with a flat nose 150 grain bullet. If this load stinks on paper, I like to tinker and will find a good load this summer. I know the routine with new rifles and cast bullets. I have 2 other bullet molds that will work also, that is a lot of possibilities.

Actually, it doesn't look like a cheap rifle anymore and the trigger is adjusted a lot better. So, I like the rifle.

I saw a couple on gun broker and was surprised at the price, but 30-06 or .308 isn't my cup of tea in a single shot.
Sounds like you have the 7.63 x 39 figured out post target pic's when it warms up.

Have you shot your Spartan yet? I'll be curious to see how well it groups, and particularly with cast.

Not yet. I called the club and the snow drifts are blocking the range gates off!!!! We are still in single digit cold weather too. I did get 35 rounds loaded and am hoping for the best.
