    Lyman 457406

    I bought a 457406 from Doug. A nice mold , thanks Doug !

    I have a Knight KP-1 , 45 /70 single shot.

I put my Burris 1.5 X 6 Variable on the rifle. Just about ideal in my opinion :

I'd like to shoot this 503 gr. Lyman g/c bullet at around 1350 fps. with modern powders, I'm not interested in " Black ".

    I found this data....It might be a good place to start ;

    530 Lyman roundnose Accurate XMP-5744 28.5 grs. 1,280 fps

You tell me what propellant and how much of it should be behind this g/c 503 gr. bullet to achieve about 1,300 - 1,350 fps.

    I'm Lucky....I'm getting a full .460 " on all the bands.

I ended up with three stitches in the web of my hand loading these hot in my marlin cowboy! All was well until i put on a glove to help cushion the recoil, Then while shooting offhand, i held the shot too long and started to lower the gun when the gloved finger tripped the trigger. Ouch! That was with 42 grains of IMR3031. Try 36 grains of that powder for a more enjoyable experience that should still get you the velocity you are seeking.
    Nice Pics!!

Interesting Ben. The Lyman 457406 mold is out of production but when it was, it was listed as a 475gr GC bullet. And yours are dropping at 503?

If I was you, I'd buy a copy of the new Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook, 4th Edition and look up the tested ballistics for the Lyman 457125, 500gr govt bullet. It gives loading data for the various powders tested, including min/max velocities and the powder charges that produced the best accuracy
    Regards

Without gas check and made of WW, mine weight 492 Gr. They may have had a couple different versions of that number because in Lyman handbook #45 the 1970 book, they show it at 482 grains from their #2 alloy. Mine has a bit longer gas check shank than Ben's picture shows.

    George :

You have any " favorite " loads for this one in a 45/70 ?

    Ben,
Notes shooting smokeless in my Sharps from years ago tell me at 200yds 10gr of Unique would get me 6". From a trapdoor, 12gr of the same did well also. For both guns the best was 28gr of 3031. 15 gr of HS6 is a good choice. Notes also show 22gr 4759 is a real good load in both guns.

Those heavy slugs are just too abusive and requires a slip on pad on the gun butts. Wimpy? Me? Yeah!!!! I've got too many lighter moulds to be shooting the 457406 or the RCBS 500 grainer very much anymore. Don't think I'd even consider using either in my Marlin Guide Gun..Geo

    Ben,
THAT rifle looks a bit uncharacteristic for you. Goin' out into the swamps?

Lyman's 45th data for that bullet:

    RP cases Rem 9-1/2 primers

    1886 Win Data: 26" barrel

    13-16gr Unique 1112-1242 fps
    22-30gr 2400 1226-1607 fps
    30-33gr IMR 4227 1472-1587 fps
    30-36gr IMR 4198 1307-1567 fps
    40-46gr IMR 3031 1451-1677 fps

    Trapdoor Data: 32" barrel

    9-13gr Unique 892-1114fps
    20-23gr 2400 1104-1236fps
    27-30gr IMR 4227 1298-1438fps

    Accurate Arms Data:

    Trapdoor 24"

    500gr plainbase 25.3gr 5744 1219 fps

    Ruger/Marlin/Win/Sharps 24"

    500gr plainbase 31.5gr 5744 1456 fps

I generally stay with 420gr and less in my Marlin 1895 and Ruger #1, so no real experience with smokeless and that bullet. At your velocity and with a GC, you should be able to cast those butter soft.

While I've shot the 457193 quite a bit (mostly with BP), I think the 457643 is a better design for hunting AND accuracy. The NEI .458"-458 RN is another design that I highy recommend. For lighter weight and more velocity, I'm working with the NOE 460-350GC.

    excess650 :

Thanks for your efforts providing that load data.

I figure these are going to kick a little bit as I go past 1,200 fps.

I may not be shooting very many of these........

34 grains of H-4198 shoves a 517 gr GC to just over 1,300 from a short barreled Guide Gun. I'm sure the extra barrel you have will make up the remainder of the velocity you seek. This is a nicely accurate load, and clean burning.

    John :

    Many thanks.

I'll be a little more careful typing a title in the future.

I just found one of these Lyman moulds in my mould locker tonight. I'm down to one 45/70 at the moment, a H&R Trapdoor which I usually shoot a Big Lube boolit over BP. This boolit should feed well in my Zastava M70 458Win Mag. I think I'd prefer a FN boolit for hunting big Sambar deer in the rain along the river banks though.

I cast the RCBS 300, 405 and 500gr, I also cast the CBE 460 and Lee 500gr for the 458. I would be happy to send you some if you wish to try them. Regards Stephen.

I had a near new RCBS 405Gn Boolit mould and lent it, RCBS handles and my Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook to a 'friend' who then promptly denied any knowledge of it. Needless to say, no longer a friend.

Kind offer Stephen, thanks, I'll keep it in mind.
