Lee C309-150-F how fat does it throw?

I've put this mold on my christmas list.

I shoot a Westernfield 30/30 (made by Marlin, so it's a 336) and has micro groove rifling.

I've read up on where the bores with microgroove tend to run larger than .308 (sometimes between .309-312) so I'm wondering if I even need to buy a sizer for it.

Of course I'll slug it once I get the mold, but just wanted to know for those of you that have this mold, how fat your as-cast boolits are using WW alloy and/or Lino are.

    Thanks!

Mine drops right at .311" with a WW + 2% tin mix, and that's the die that I lube with. It also crimps the GC in place. Mine weigh 160gr with GC and lube.

Good point. I hadn't forgotten that I NEEDED GC's, just that I forgot that I need a way to put them on. I use Hornady checks so I gotta use the sizer to crimp them.

Worst comes to worse, I can always open up the sizer or mold a bit if need be.

Check into Lee's nose first sizing dies. They work very very well and are cheap and easy to use.

I have an old single cavity that drops .312 from range scrap.

Right... my point was that I didn't know if I needed a sizer or not given the as-cast size may be perfect for my bore, but I forgot I had to gas check these boolits anyway.

At the end of the day, I'll just slug my bore, cast/quench a batch, give 'em a few days then mic them. I don't want to wind up sizing them down to .309 though if I need larger than that.

My old single cavity model drops them at .311 using wheel weights. It and the Lee 405fp were the first moulds I bought when I started casting for rifles. It is a good shooting boolit in all my 30 caliber guns.

    0.3105"...

The Lee sizer will size the entire boolit to get the check in place...

I don't know if you can insert the boolit up-side-down and just insert far enough to get the check seated...

Or, maybe Lee makes a 0.311" sizing die and that would be the ticket...

    Good-luck...BCB

I bought the Lee .314" sizer to put checks on my smaller .30 cal boolits without sizing the boolit itself. Works good .309-.311"

They have, 308/309/311/314 as normal stock.
Lee will make the die in any size you want but the wait is around a month.

    Why wait
Get a 00 buckshot and slug the barrel, then you'll know what you're aiming for.

If ya push em slow ya don`t need a check . I don`t install a GC until I go over 1500 fps (I can tell accuracy drops off a bit & a little leading)

    I shoot em out of a 336 .

    I got the same mold Mine throws .3105 & i size & lube on a lyman 450 ,I use a 467 top punch

Mine drops at .311 and I removed the gas check shank with a .3115 reamer. I've been shooting them using Unique and I just loaded a bunch using Trail Boss in 30-30 and 30-06. They make great plinking boolits.

The throat dimension is more important than the barrel groove dimension. The bullet needs to fill the throat. Slugging the barrel full length will let you know if there are any tight or loose spots. Tight spots generally show up under the dovetails, and sometimes under the roll markings on the barrel. I had a Marlin 1894 in 44Mag that the roll marking was visible when looking through the bore from the breech. My 1894CL in 32-20 was TIGHT just ahead of the chamber as if the chamber was swaged in rather than cut with a reamer. Marlin rebarreled the 44Mag, and I fire lapped the 32-20.

For your 30-30, I would suggest starting with the .311" sizer.

I have 309,310,and 311 Lee sizers. I read that nose first sizing is really a bit more accurate way to size rifle bullets. From my testing experience, I believe this to be true, especially with 22 caliber bullets.
