They were dropped into water.
I was surprised that dropping them into water would harden them 10 BHN, but according to some replies that appears to be normal.
The Lee tester is fine for the...

Howdy, I'm very new to casting. A couple of years ago I cast a bunch of Lee slugs. It was fun, so I decided to try casting bullets. This past fall I bought a Lee .45 230gn 6 cavity tumble lube...

Ah ha! Now it makes sense to me.
I was thinking the spring was intended to take up the slack in the shut-off rod slot. Mine wasn't so I was wondering my spring should be bent more, or if it...

I got tired of fluctuating temperatures in my Lee 4-20, so I bought a Lyman Mag 25. Set it and forget it. Works perfectly! Life is so much better now. Being a beginner I have enough to deal with...

Yep. We have an oil heating system, but mostly use a wood stove for heat in the winter. When I dump the ashes into a 20 gallon steel trash can outside I gauge the wind. No matter how sure I am of...

Tried the Lyman digital for a few seconds while smelting lead with poor results. Wide temperature fluctuations over short periods of time. Then tried it alongside a Lyman mechanical in my Lee 4-20....

Understood, but until I have some more experience I will feel more comfortable with a thermometer.
I stumbled upon a Lyman digital from Amazon warehouse for $18 shipped. (yeah I know it has mixed...

I missed this by two minutes. Story of my life.
What do you guys think of FortuneCookie45LC and ElvisAmmo on youtube?

Cassette tape? Did they just defrost you?
I haven't seen cassette tape in 2 decades.

Interesting. Perhaps a short piece of very light yarn stuck on the end of a something like coat hanger wire a foot or two above the smelting pan. Thanks.
Spider web silk would be perfect if I...

I'm using propane. Even if it was electric I don't want a PID for this. I want a standalone digital thermometer. Preferably something reasonably usable and not super expensive.

I could wait for the next hurricane here in CT, but I'll be waiting for a long time and they say pouring rain isn't the best weather for dealing with molten lead.

I was smelting about 10 lbs of wheel weights outside today. There was a very slight breeze, but I could not determine its direction nor could I see any fumes/smoke coming off my molten metal other...

I have only smelted wheel weights 3 times, so I am a beginner. Although I do examine wheel weights I would like to not have to be so concerned there might be zinc that I missed. As of now I'm only...
I ended up ordering the 452-230-2R -TL. It will suit my needs for now and possibly well into the future. I'm a plinker, steel shooter, former IPSC competitor. Shooting fast is more fun to me than...

If I search for "PID" the query returns "Sorry - no matches. Please try some different terms."
If I search for "controller" the query returns 1,300 records many of which include "PID".
Why does...
The only thing I have cast so far was last year I cast a bunch of Lee 12ga slugs to reduce my practice costs with a 12 gauge.
Now I want to try making some plinking bullets for fun even though...

Howdy folks,
I've been doing a little casting, but want to step up my game a little bit. A PID is more than I need. I want to use a thermometer for a while at least. Perhaps I missed a sticky,...
