You don't run into any of those problems when using a "Shad Style" Bottom pour Spout and pot.
Most of those valves have plastic or teflon in them.. It won't work

If you have to be ready to catch over flow due to problems.. Then I think there is a flaw in the design.

Even with a bottom pour pot (I built a 400 pounder) you are still going to have skim and flux. I found that a metal ice fishing ladle for clearing the ice works excellent. My ladle has 1/4 inch...
Wow.. nice work! Using hot water is a big plus in the cooling dept. The fact that the ramp is below the water line amazes me. How far below? The shot must stay soft/hot enough to roll down the...

14$ a pound.. Where? I would buy 10 pounds if at that price.
I have not tried pellets so I can't say, but for me, I find the best use for BP substitutes is in a break open shotgun. Load'm...

Generally WW's are a bit too hard for maxi balls. Try something softer closer to pure lead. WW's do work well for patched round balls though.

Cast iron Corn wedge pans stack the same.. 1 in then 1 out, and come in at just over 2 pounds each.

Regular muffin tins are a pain.. Not my idea of a good time. I'll chime in with the others on using cast iron, they fall out every time with no muss, no fuss.

I agree here.. Very seldom do I have to add anything to my range scrap. If I do it is a very small amount for long skinny boolits.

166 degrees F is not a very big window, and if not paying attention, going over happens quickly.

You can control the temp of any pot/melt with an attentive eye and a thermometer.

It sounds like a lot of work and could be a safety hazard if not done correctly. I run 2 Lee pro 4-20's side by side. Fill them both with ingots and help one of them heat up with a propane torch...

When it comes to smelting/rendering scrap lead, especially in large batches... a propane burner, a thermometer, and a large cast iron or heavy welded steel pot is really hard to beat. The...

If you use only 1 pot, make sure you clean it very thoroughly between every smelting and casting session. If not, you will end up with dirt and junk in your boolits.

A cast iron or heavy steel pot will be fine for small batches, but electric burners are slow and will often cycle. they are best suited to mold warmers. I would just bite the boolit and get a...

Like dikman said.. It is not necessary to use pure lead for patched round balls. COWW's and range scrap work fine. Some will say use only pure because that's what the old timers used. It is what...

At 5-bhn currently, I wouldn't be concerned about getting your lead too hard. Turn up the heat and add what is needed for proper fill out.

If you can find them, 444 marlin cases work good too.
