I just found this old thread and would like to know how you "drill out" the gas plug. I want to shoot light cast loads and hand-cycle the action. What size drill, etc? Thanks..

I’m not much help, but from what I see, the sight is definitely not pinned or screwed on in any way. The blade and base appear to be a single piece, but how it is mounted I have no clue. Welded?...

My choice exactly! My dad bought it in 1953 and I have enjoyed it since then. An amazing gun.
I also have its companion, a 1954 Colt 3 5 7. It was my duty weapon for many years.

I tried those Speer bullets in 9mm years ago. If you have the same ones, they are swaged, not cast……very soft! Even using starting loads caused excessive leading. Just be aware, and good luck.

Are Lee pots garbage? Not the two I have. Both are 4-lb ladle types. I use the infinite heat model for 2 and 4 cavity molds, and the old single heat for 1 and 2 cavity molds. I keep the single...
Though I have several K and J frames which I very much enjoy shooting, my all-time favorite is my Colt 357 4". This gun was purchased new by my father in 1954, and given to me in 1977 when I started...

Got mine back in 10 days. Trigger is MUCH better.
I started my LEO career in the mid-70's and carried both Colts and Smiths. In a nutshell, my observations are
1. Smiths are easier to work on when they go out of time. When Colts go out of...

to the OP: is this of interest? http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?407129-WTS-45-Long-Colt-rcbs-carbide-die-set-Lyman-454190-mould
Congrats on the Colt. You will thoroughly enjoy it. Great action and balance. Mine is a 1st-year "Colt 3 5 7". My dad bought it in 1954 and gave it to me when I entered the Academy. Carried it...
Thanks for the info. I kind of figured around the 70's. That's when I acquired most of my single cavity rifle molds. I had 148 WC molds but never realized they made the light ones.
I picked up this Lee mold 358-116-WC several years ago at a gun show. I think I paid $5 for it. Anyway, I have never seen it in any catalog or product list. It drops a really nice little 116 grain...

Thanks for all the replies. I'll be making a trip to the range next week to try them out. I might have time to load some 9mm's and try less crimp. I'll let you know what happens next week.
Forum: Coatings and Alternatives
Thanks. I'll try less crimp. I have been using a pretty heavy crimp for 9mm because I had to be sure they would chamber in 5 different guns. I'll see what happens.
Forum: Coatings and Alternatives
Do you mean use a .357 expander die ? Please explain.
Forum: Coatings and Alternatives
Good to know.
Powder coat 9mm's ? I've always had leading with 9's unless I heat treated the bullets and sized large, .357-.358". Tell me more!
Forum: Coatings and Alternatives
I have been casting and loading since 1972. I cannot count the literally tens of thousands of .38's I have shot, cast from my 2-cavity Cramer wadcutter mould, pushed by 2.7 gr of Bullseye. I always...
What is "ok" ? What kind of groups should it hold at 25 yards? I should add a few details:
I size them .357". That is what my Glocks prefer.
The alloy is clip-on WW with 2% tin added....
I have acquired an RCBS 9mm mold that drops a 125 gr RN bullet. It is not plain-base but rather a gas check design. My question is this: If I use it without gas checks, will it behave like a...

I didn't measure. I seated the bullet to the crimp groove. If I use that bullet again in the Garand, I'll measure.

That sounds good. My daughter used to live in Puyallup, and I have shot at Paul Bunyan before. It will be a while before we move.... just now started to get the house ready to sell. Retired a year...

Thanks, Scharf. I notice your location is Puget Sound. Whereabouts? My daughter lives in Bonney Lake and the wife and I are in the process of moving there.

Finally getting there!
Today's 16 rds were with the Lee C312-185-1R sized .310" and pushed by 31.5 gr of DP74 (basically AA2520). Cycling was perfect, with the brass landing about 10 ft to the...

Just got back from the range with more progress.
Last time I shot the Garand I was using the Lyman 311041. It drops from my mold at .3085 to .309". I ran it through a .310 sizer and after 16...
