I use a center punch as above and a dial caliper like the one in a previous post.
I try to get the same stroke for every test (not hard to do) and then measure the depth of the dent.

My six cavity drops the boolits at 161-163grns
They shoot great and I cast some up for a friend that uses them hog hunting.
I cast them hard and water quench.
I like to use them for action...

I use full metal jacketed bullets to break in my barrels.
Lead is too soft to do what is needed for breaking in a barrel unless you are using polishing compound on the lead boolits :bigsmyl2:.

Use can use the small end of a ball pien hammer to open up the gas check also.... and an advantage is that you have a handle to help locate and hold your check down.

For the guys and girls that use alot of lead specials in magnum chambers just get a chamber reamer from Dave Manson at Manson precision Reamers.
A few light turns with it during your cleaning...

are you using the Lee Factory Crimp die to crimp? If not the you need to borrow/buy one and try it you will like it over the taper crimp die...these really help in getting your ammo to function...
