Ive used a Chrony for over fifteen years,Beta model and other than its like to have the sun overhead it has worked flawlessly.

1.8 inch of barrel would not by itself increase velocity by 250 fps but a boolit that sits deeper in a case and a bit longer barrel would ,in my opinion.
Your wondering is in the right direction and...

Nose first here too,the pressure on the check keeps it square as it gets pressed on the boolit,unlike doing it base up .

Due to carpal tunnel ive given up on the 45-70,454s and big boomers in general.
I find .45 auto,9mm,357,308 and 30-30 a lot more enjoyable along with air rifles/pistols.

Another happy user of the 4 grain Red Dot load here,my 17 and 26 Glocks love it too.

I would say Unique,Bullseye and 2400 as well.
Unique doesn't meter well in some powder measures but good enough out of my ancient Lyman 55 and Lee auto disc.
Smoke? I don't think its the powder...
